>>1362066in my city we used to have trams until the 1960s
these days we have "the nation's most modern bus fleet"
we also have about 7 train lines that start on one side of the city and end on another crossing through the CBD
some areas are very very hilly and steep
we have some busways that pass underground or roads exclusively for buses
I used to catch one train at its terminus to the CBD for work
you could also bring a bicycle onto the train if you wanted
the traffic if you drove in would take you about 40 minutes but it might only be 30 on the train
I was living about 20 minutes drive from this bus/train terminus (the closest stop) and always the parking was terrible
I figured many people who live a 15 minute walk were probably too lazy to and drove to the station
all of the other stations parking were packed and on this train line if one train ahead was stopped, all trains behind would also stop
they would stop the train for signals (of course) and if someone needed a paramedic the paramedics would not remove the person from the train instead just halt at the station until the paramedics had them stable enough to get into their ambulance, which was still a stretcher ride from the platform
this stoping was very annoying, and trains are frequently late, unions strike, wires come down and halt the whole line
I got to thinking that they should tear up the train lines and replace them with a busway
Pros
>any idiot can drive a bus>bus driving school is not as unionised and controlled as the train driving school>no wires to fall down>1 bus stopping doesn't stop every other bus behind it>could have buses that service an area then express to the CBD>could have buses that just service the buswayCons
>not as easily automated>could be less environmentally friendly depending on implementation>possible the government would allow other traffic into the busway in the future
