Any bike nerds out there know where I can find a steel frame for under 100 dollars. I’ve been looking on Craigslist and eBay but still no luck. I’m trying to make a single speed bike

So you're looking for horizontal dropouts I assume. Consider not bothering with a steel SS conversion until you've ridden a geared bike around without shifting for a few weeks. Single speed is okay and the gains in drive-train friction are nice but not huge, and eventually it will be annoying if you are riding for recreation. For a city beater it almost makes sense because it needs less maintenance, but the cost of building one is stupid compared to just getting a shitty geared bike and waiting until the parts crap out (which would probably be years and years). It's just not worth doing if you don't have the money for a vanity project. You are scrimping on the frame already, so you are not in a place to build one. Get a $30 single speed conversion kit and slap it on a cheap aluminum hybrid if you must

I’ve been riding my scwinn phocus for a while and it’s been good to be, but I do like a simpler bike and the weight reduction. I could buy that kit but I probably still be dissatisfied, just the aluminum frame weights too much and I feel sluggish but I’ll consider it. If anything I’ll just buy a cheap already built one and upgrade it a little.

Here in Britain we have a website called Gumtree which has local classifieds - I guess Craigslist is what you guys use in America? (Craigslist is not popular in Britain at all and is only used by seedy people looking for porn or whatever the fuck).

Also I just looked on eBay and I found pic related in about two seconds - £69.00 is $86.73 USD, by the way, so yes it's under $100.

How is steel frame better than aluminum? Aluminum ones are more common these days and are lighter.

You want horizontal dropouts so you can tension the chain by sliding the wheel back. So basically 80s and earlier. Modern bikes have vertical dropouts where the wheel has to sit in one spot.

otherwise you need to run a tensioner and can't do fixed gear.

Depends on geometry too, not just frame material. There can be bikes made of alumemeium that are comfier than shittily designed steel bikes.
