Spandex isn't any more aerodynamic than a tight polyester tshirt and shorts and the only time I've ever chaffed significantly was when I made the mistake of spending 30 miles on a "real" road saddle instead of my nice gel one (wouldn't have bothered trying at all if I realized the whole 'diaper+lube' thing wasn't optional).

I like GCN. Yes they do sponsored videos but so do most big YouTube channels like Linus Tech Tips etc. As long as money isn't changing their editorial opinion and as long as the sponsorship is disclosed (which it is) then I'm fine with that.

I watched a video of theirs recently (I think it's maybe a couple years old) where they were taking a look (pun intended) at Look's carbon road bike factories. And it was sponsored by Look. But I see no problem with that, as long as they don't suddenly start saying that Look bikes are better than everything else without disclosing a paid endorsement. It gave us an opportunity to see how carbon bikes are built.

Stay seething.

They are literally an advertainment company owned by an add/marketing agency.

So does the website of Vox Media, the company that runs The Verge, Vox News, etc. And so do the websites of basically ANY media company (news company, blog, newspaper, tech review website, even TV station, etc.) because how do any of these companies make money? ADVERTISING, obviously. Without adverts they couldn't sustain themselves, could they? How do you think Fox makes money when they air Family Guy, for example?

You're acting as if GCN are acting any differently to other YouTube channels and other media companies, but they're not. Every time I watch a Linus Tech Tips video I see him do an advert / sponsor segment - in fact there's usually two (one at the beginning, one at the end). The guy has to pay the bills, doesn't he?

There is a massive difference between running ads during a Family Guy episode and having a YouTube channel where 90% of your content is a not even thinly veiled advertisement. In the first case you provide quality content people want to watch and show some ads during it to get more money. In the latter you turn the advertisements into the content.

Also especially in niche markets like cycling if you're focusing on the latter as being a professional industry shill it severely limits what you can do besides the shill videos. You can't go and do videos telling people there's no reason to buy the latest and greatest when all of your income is dependant on shilling the latest and greatest in your industry. You can't do fun content with shitty old bikes bought for pennies because people might get the idea that buying used bikes and gear is actually possible.

In the first case you're producing quality content people want to watch and advertisers are paying for you to show their products during the content even if it has nothing to do with the actual content. And because your income depends more on the quality of content instead of the money you get for shilling, as the more people want to watch your content the more you can charge for the ads, you can focus on creating quality content.
