I know this isn't exactly /n/...but in a sane world boomers would be building Accessory Dwelling Units and giving up their homes to their children.

Are ADUs common where you live? In my county they seem to be relaxing the rules a lot due to the housing crisis

Atlanta and Chicago both recently passed ADU reform laws. It’s inane to think they were outlawed in Chicago for so long.

In my city they’re common in certain, older neighborhoods

Unfortunately, cities pass zoning laws that are way too restrictive. ReasonTV did a piece on this one town that relaxed it's ADU laws and in it, a few back lanes became ADU streets, which I found to be pretty cool.

OTOH what you suggested is also contradictory to North American culture. The social norm is to move out early and live separate from your parents. In some mudslime cultures, the social norm is to build onto your parents' house when you start a family (and live with them until then). In Russian culture, it's common enough to have retiree parents move in with their children.

Europe here, frankly our cities are reasonably dense. In Germany only a third of households are single family detached, and even then the properties generally aren't huge. We don't have endless low density boomerburbia to fill in.

I work closely with real estate agents and sellers are so fucking greedy. They always want to list their home 50-100k above market value. These poor agents have to waste hours of time trying to get them to come down in price. Usually because no one is coming to see the place. You really think they would just give up their home to their children so easily? People are way too greedy for this kind of thing to happen.

They just made them legal again in my city. Some were grandfathered in as old carriage houses of mansions.
Problem is the housing requirements are absurdly expensive.

Some weren't, sadly. when I was looking at houses in 09 there was a 2 house on 1 lot setup for 30 grand but as soon as it changed hands the city was going to force the new owner to tear one down. This was back when they were worried about too many vacant, blighted houses dragging down the city, I can't believe that was 10 years ago.

Pretty incredible the urban renaissance cities have experienced over the last two decades. I can't imagine that happening now with the push for triplexes, eliminating single family zoning, etc.

It’s just 1 decade but, whether you like it or not, it is incredible to see how much got transformed.

However the push for zoning reform you see now is because of
1. Housing crises near the bigger cities because so many people want to live there
2. It’s not a push for triplexes, it’s a push to end the ban on triplexes.
3. The zoning just sucked to begin with and I’m excited to see some nice neighborhoods get improved even more.

Why bother to end the ban if they aren't going to push for more triplexes? However you phrase it, we're going to wind up with more triplexes. Which I'm not really opposed to, but I think we would be better off concentrating new housing within a block or so of transit, rather than scattering them throughout the neighborhoods.
