-someone who can work safely even when the company doesn't maintain their shit and will put you in dangerous situations
-someone who can follow a schedule and instructions
-someone who can stay awake for long periods of time

Not him but make your application look good and attractive. And how well can you speak? People who can talk well are also valued because radio and other communication devices. Having some knowledge in the field (not necessarily experience) should probably help...
And also train simulators. While they aren't supposed to train you, you'll get a feel for how they handle. Good luck!

From my experience with British companies, they're looking for someone who has been an agency worker for years, won't join the union, lives 10 minutes walk away from their base station (but will always drive regardless) and loves sucking dicks and doing wackazade split shifts.
