If you ride defensively and respect other people's right of way you'll get along fine. Coming to a complete stop at every stop sign is just retardedly anal. If you are encountering a lot of stop signs its probably because you are taking a quieter road, why should you get penalized for staying off a busier road.
All the traffic lights here are on sensors and most don't detect cyclists. No point waiting at a light that will never go green. Mostly early mornings where I have to go through reds, rest of the day there is generally enough traffic that a car will trigger the light for me.
I seldom encounter a situation where lane splitting would benefit me so I don't bother doing it.
I only signal if I think it might be helpful, but in general drivers don't seem to recognize a signal as a signal. When I'm turning right down a street where vehicle is waiting to pull out I'll signal, but 90+ % of the time they don't move until I make my turn, like they don't believe me. If a vehicle is turning left down the same road I'm making a right onto, or on my left on a road I'm turning left onto, I don't signal anymore. They don't see it as a signal, they see it as me waving them through and I get cut off every time.
