Alright so I was about to pull the trigger on a 2019 Giant Fathom 29 in Vibrant Blue... I love the blue, the Orange clash is cool... But now it's looking a little edgy and race looking, for my tastes....after seeing, what I would call, chill vibe pastel colors like on Santa Cruz and Rocky Mountain, etc....

I'm thinking if I wait til 2020, Giant have another paint option If prefer more, as this trend is getting big, and the harsh hxc race colors are subsiding....

WAIT IR BUY THIS BITCHIN BLUE BIKE, ANONS?

True day. The Fathom will be a huge leap forward with any bike I've ever had so I'm stoked. I guess Yeti's seafoam green or blue or teal or whatever is pretty ultimate too tier comfy summer beach vib3z, but ya santa cruzes are at local shop and they don't stand out cuz dull pastel colors

Umm I've painted guitars, cabinets, Aquarium stands, varnished decks and tables. No I'm not going to repaint a high dollar bicycle. Sure, I'd love to get a yard sale beach cruiser and do a sweet sky blue and white scheme though.

giant (and other mtb brands) dealer here. fathom is a great choice. best value hardtail on the market right now.

2020 fathom 27.5s are available to order.

colors are desert sand (same as 2019 reign sx 1) and gunmetal black which has nothing in common with a proper blued gun finish and is really a plain matte black.

I recommend the fathom 27.5 1 because it has the best geometry and best components. Fathom 2 has gone back to a 2x drivetrain this year which is fucking lame. And the 29er has XC geometry which is not as capable of navigating steep rocky technical trails.

29ers are available to preorder. no word from giant on when they will arrive. available colors are silver with sky blue graphics (a la early 2000s), red and black with white logo (basically specialized colors), and metallic navy with silver graphics which is basically similar to the 2019 escape city disc, without the rough texture.

You should go by your LBS, place an order for the bike you want, and bring a pack of beer as a thank you.

and most importantly, hit the trails and ride your fuckin bike!

Yeah but what the fuck, you're already paying the shop $$$ to buy a new bike and ordering it is easy as fuck for them. Maybe buying them beer means they'll set it up better but i'd hope i don't have to buy them beer everytime i want something done competently.

I buy bike shop guys beer when they do me favors like let me borrow a meme tool or do a generous insurance quote and don't charge me.

bike shop workers are not on commission. they get paid the same 8-12 dollars an hour whether you buya bike or not. if they are giving you good service and good advice, it's not because they are paid to, it's because they like you.

Giving good service and being friendly or doing something simple like ordering a bike isn't beyond the scope of your job or more than a customer might just expect. It's literally just your job. It's not a favour. I realize you don't get paid much but your shop is probably on the verge of shutting down to begin with so giving the shop money does atleast help you not lose your job or have your hours cut. And I think you do it because you like it and if you don't like it and do it because you can't do anything else then you probably aren't very good at it.

This is a cultural thing as well anon. We don't have a tipping culture in NZ, so the idea of having to pay an employee separately just to get good service and because they earn a bad wage, doesn't really make sense to me.

And as I said, I even DO bring beer sometimes to several bike shops i go to. I give my car mechanic beer/ have a few with him sometimes too. And it's not normal here. How many of your customers bring you beer anyway? Do you often resent people for not doing it?

Do bright bikes even sell? I think most people seem to want something pretty low key and maybe even they like just cringey black/black.

What I really don't get though is why there are so many RED bikes, when red is basically the colour of anger, why put all these red bikes on the road when cyclists are already a target for road rage?
For me it's orange, yellow, celeste, pink or purple

are there any pros and cons of different colors besides looks? does it matter that black and red absorb more heat? can white get discolored over time? do they bother to save a bit of weight on the paint job on a dark carbon frame or on a metallic aluminium frame?

Paints do add weight, people strip paint off of aluminum and *carbon* bikes and save triple digit grams. White doesn’t really become discolored, anodized aluminum will. Raw aluminum is popular because it still looks good even when beat to shit (chips in downtube, bike rack/shuttling marks), but most people don’t care about paint weight.
If you’re worried about the long term paint looking good, there’s a lot of options of frame protectors (almost all being derived from clear 3M outdoor grade sticky tape) that work well and don’t turn yellow with sun exposure

Anodized bolts? My green 2008 specialized enduro (bright sparkly anodized green) as faded into a less colorful, almost dirty looking combination of color. Still good looking and still sparkly, but it’s pretty damn obvious where a sticker was protecting the anodized finish from UV
