Single Speed Bicycles

No.1369485 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
I've been training to buy a single speed bicycle. I've been riding my hand-me-down Specialized Sirrus Men's V-Brake and trying out various gear ratios to make sure I like the idea. I've done 120 miles so far and tackled a bunch of 5% and 10.5% grades. I've tried a bunch of gear ratios and now know what works for me, what's too low, what's too high.

But at this point I've reached analysis paralysis. I don't know what single speed to get. The ones I've been thinking of are:

1.) Surly Cross-Check
Pros: Jack of all trades, Super strong frame, a real Do Anything Bike.
Cons: A completed bike is supposed to weigh 25 to 30 lbs. Has to be ordered and built up by my local bike shop.

2.) Surly Straggler
Pros: Same as above + disk brakes
Cons: Same as above + It's really fucking expensive.

3.) Wabi Cycles Urban Classic
Pros: Lightweight frame, can ship direct to me with my preferred gear ratio. Can be shipped right to my door for $995.

I have heard nothing but praise for the Wabi cycles. Some people with $7K carbon fiber superbikes say the Wabi is their favorite. It's just a good lightweight classic single speed. I've heard nothing but good things.

I was drawn to the Surley bikes initially because I like the idea of having a do-anything bike. But, that's mostly fantasy. There are no dirt tracks near me. Hell, there aren't even any public dirt roads near me. I'd only ever ride my single speed on pavement. I probably won't ever do any bikepacking (much as I love the idea). So really, the Wabi is probably as much bike as I need, and it's supposed to be FUN. And that's sort of the point right?

The Cross-Check and Straggler seem like awesome bikes, and they're so bomb proof I have no doubt they'd last forever, but if all I'm doing is riding on pavement, maybe I'd be happier with a lightweight nimble snappy Wabi bike?

What do you guys think? I know the Wabi is kind of a meme but people seem to really love them,.
