Just got Pic related in the ole Email. Is the Trek Bicycle Company trying to sell helmets to the guy who stole your bike?

I am also confused by the subject of their email. Is there a lot of controversy surrounding what people call commuter helmets? Also in an unrelated note, what the hell is a 'commuter helmet'?

They're obviously expecting commuters to ride casual and slower, in mostly normal clothing. The helmet must fit in with that.

Also regular cycling helmets are an aerodynamic disaster. Slowly but steadily the cycling world is moving to smoother, rounder helmets with better places ventilation slits.

The main problem with anything on 2 wheels is that you have to join a niche. You're either MTB dudebro or Roadie let tour de faggó or BMX kid, or Hipster Fixie. Crotch rocket Jap sport bike or Harley Davifatguy. There's no middle ground where people can just ride for fun. Except that's what Commuter, or City / "Comfort" bikes are. Naked bikes in the motorcycle world.

Helmets for each reflect the styling of the given sport, while there's no casual normie middle ground.

This is a great attempt at making just a regular basic standard bike helmet. Not strapping up to chase Strava times. Not shredding berms and downhill whips. No jumping. Just riding a bike.

If you want a helmet that's comfortable and light it's going to be aimed at people who spend a lot of time on bikes, sometimes referred to as cyclists. Cyclists also tend to wear what you erroneously refer to as "latex", because it's a lot more comfortable if you're on a bike for a long time.

So if you don't give a shit about comfort, by all means buy a "commuter helmet", it will be designed above all around "not looking like a cyclist". Best way to prove you don't care about looks is to buy a helmet that shits all over functionality in order to prove something about looks.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with cross chaining. Running small-small isn't ideal as it has the biggest drivetrain losses but can still be better than having to shift front if you come to a short section of slightly flatter ground.

I ride on an old steel roadbike but with very high end 90s components and 23 mil tires. I just wear black bips and a white t shirt, without a helmet. I also use a brooks saddle and road clipless pedals. I also have raised TT bars for the times I want to get rid of the pressure off my wrists. I got a bar end mirror, a saddle bag and a large frame bag for keeping my stuff in. I am blonde with huge thigs,a beard and long hair. I can sprint to 70 kmh on the flats but not hold it for long. I don't have the body of an endurance cyclist.

Recreational road cyclists don't know what to make of me. At stoplights they look at me and my bike with weirdly but when its green they are still trying to click in I am already clicked in and going blasting away. Regular people also don't know what to think of me. This is my entry to 4chan, /n/.

So the funny thing about almost all apparel (certainly athletic apparel) is that manufacturers put their brand on it. Even if you buy "subtle" stuff like Rapha, it's still overtly branded, just not necessarily with words, but with a trademark feature like the armband.

Long hair and a beard means I have zero wind noise, it makes riding so much more enjoyable. The moment I put on a helmet it becomes unbearable, it creates turbulence around the ears and the buffeting of the straps. bicycle helmets create hearing damage.

people have tried the same thing with motorcycle helmets, someone made a cool one that inflates the jacket and puts a neck cuff around you to prevent spinal compression injuries that blows up fast enough that it inflates in the time you go over handlebars to when your head hits the ground.

Wear at least a DH helmet with impact rated safety goggles or (better) a proper fitting, SNELL certified motorcycle helmet.
The average speed of a motorcycle and bike crash is only about 8mph apart, with motorcyclists getting in accidents far more often. The "motorcycle helmets aren't safe at such low speeds" meme is a myth. They're designed for similar conditions.

I'd rather deal with the heat than having to deal with getting more dental work done or risking glass embedded in my face or a rock breaking my nose. Or worse, there's always worse.
If you ride in the evenings it also gives you the wonderful feeling of committing mass murder on any gnat clouds you ride through.
A standard or even BMX or ""commuter"" bike helmet will save you from an extremely limited set of circumstances.
