Problems were -- they shared rail space with freight traffic, Canadian Government owned both CN and Via and the rail line -- so they were holding back freight in favour of the Turbos.
The government wanted to sell CN at the time so it ended the favouring of VIA trains to improve CN's time tables to make them look better.
-- because of track conditions , cross overs and switches going into Toronto, this limited speed the could operate at
-- All jet engines are bad for a passenger train that has to sit and idle while waiting for passengers etc
--VIA with no more money, still had to provide a train to all the rinky dink towns that the turbos sped past.
it just would have cost billions to eliminate all the level crossings -- by pass the small towns tracks pass through and have dedicated track.
That is why I laugh and smile when some one suggests high speed rail in Canada
