I also think regular passenger cars should have a limit on the horsepower of the engine too. Exemptions for work vehicles and special licensing for automotive enthusiasts would be reasonable, but I do not see the utility of driving a 300 hp sedan to pick up groceries when the same car with a 100 hp engine can accomplish the exact same thing.

It's not a bad idea though, except for the fact that in general causing resentment over authoritarianism in the populace is a dangerous thing and you have to pick your battles. It would probably be political suicide for whoever tried to do it, and even if not, would rile up a bunch of >muh freedom crazies.

I think lower across the board speed limits make more sense.

I didn’t say I need video games. But me being bad at video games has few if any repercussions to anyone’s safety. Someone being a bad or inattentive driver is a danger to everyone else on the road. There is no equivalence to these two topics, it’s not an issue of needs, it’s an issue of the public’s general safety and well-being.

I personally love driving and cars.
From a utilitarian perspective, I think society could be improved by having less people drive, less often, in smaller more efficient vehicles. With good alternatives.

I have way less of a problem with drivers who also love driving but I see frustrated people stuck in traffic jams every day I think most people just do it routinely because they have to or they think they have to.

If someone has a record of driving drunk or driving recklessly they should be limited to driving a lightweight car under 2800 lbs so they are at a weight disadvantage. When an suv-style car crashes into a low light sedan the suv will roll over the car and crush the roof in. They don't show it because it would cause panic but that is what happens. Most DUI deaths occur between trucks and small cars.

One of the big ironies is that it's actually 'muh safety' which has made cars less safe for cyclists and pedestrians.
Stricter crash safety testing has made cars larger, heavier, with worse visibility, and that because of it, they don't stop quicker and aren't more efficient, despite technological improvements.

give me drivers in these. They can fucking see everyone around them. They can handle better. They take up half the space on the road. They can stop on a dime. You can see traffic over them. They can actually feel their speed. And they know that if they do hit something their car will crumple up like a tissue box.

I had a '97 metro hatchback, loved that thing but had to get rid of it after it developed transmission problems that would have cost more to fix than the car was worth. If they still made new ones of that same model I would buy it without a second thought. I have no doubt there is a huge market for cars like that if they were still allowed to be made. Everyone I've talked to who owned metros or similar shitboxes share my sentiments.

Ah yes, 80's and 90's cars are the most fun and enjoyable. New cars you can't even see out the back, and the doorline comes up to your chin so you have very limited visibility. Past 20 feet you rely on visual cues when driving and anything that reduces visibility will cause crashes. IDK why people buy them. They are complete shit.

Instead they buy a new car with absolutely no track record on reliability and questionable warranty. My current car has over 400 000 km on it and there's not been a single problem. The good thing about buying old shitboxes is that you know exactly which engine/transmission combos will go as long as you keep maintaining it and which ones are disasters. With new models you have no way of knowing that. Just look at the dumpster fire of VAG engines and DSG transmissions. And they don't even fix them under warranty claiming that the cars burning 1 liter of oil over 1 000 km is "normal". Or how the manufacturers will weasel their way out of any rust warranty they have on their chassis under all kinds of excuses.

I'm not against this for the same reason I'm fine living in a country which allows private citizens to own firearms but places limits on things like rate of fire and explosive ammunition. It's less about safety and more about emissions and dependence on foreign energy suppliers for me though. People will manage to kill themselves in passenger cars regardless of the speed. (non seatbelt use, driving in front of oncoming traffic, DUI, driving through a flood, etc)
