Taken 1 second before crashing. Luckily bike was fine, my face had a giant press mark on it from the sunglasses. Had to wear makeup for days to cover it up.

Really hot this time of the year in Missouri. 90°+ by 10am, 50%+ humidity. Normies fear my tanlines. I look like a 1960s playboy pinup lines so crisp!

My collection of stuff found on the road so far this season includes. 7/16 combo crescent wrench with pivot ratchet on one end, large carabiner, container with 2 unopened mini things of super glue, and a nice flat head screwdriver.

I'm a sucker for picking up stuff I see as I'm out for a ride. Last year I found a 6.5 ton capacity U shackle made of 7/8" steel bar with screw in retainer. I have no use for it but its still sitting on the floor in the corner.

I love finding stuff out on the road too. Last year a found a decent channellock plier. This year I found a pack of smokes with 1 cigarette left, then $40 another time, and most recently a plush toy I'm going to use as a saddle charm.

last sunday, i took the train north from nyc to croton-on-hudson. rode up to the new reservoir, then picked up the croton aquaduct trailway and headed back south. the trailway follows the route of the original aquaduct that brought water into nyc. pretty comfy trailway mostly made up of doubletrack, little bit of singletrack and slightly technical sections.

Went to tackle a freshly paved climb with a couple of friends, sadly the works weren't finished (they were supposed to be) so we couldn't ride it.
The road to and from was lovely though, still put down 100km so all is gud. My rice cakes were a big hit.

The acceleration is nice on the bike however, it tops out at 15mph not worth the $4000+ in my opinion. I watched the sales man sell a pair to some boomers who wanted them for travel. Even the mechanic working on my bike said it wasn't worth the money.

fuck my life.

down here it's been the most hot winter in recorded history, everything is dry and windy as fuck. tractor in pic related is not on fire, is just dust.
dirt roads have 5 to 12cm of very fine ultra dry powder that flys all over the place. slows you down all the time, gets in the chain and lungs. sometimes is like driving in very fine snow powder, it's easy to loose control and it even sounds like snow. have to ride with a buff around my mouth and end breathing saliva mud.

also fuck parrots (there are thousends of them around). they make their ugly nests with twigs from spikey trees (up to 4cm thorns) and leave lots of them in the road. yesterday went for a ride, had 4 punctures in less than 3 km.
seems that slime stopped working and is not filling the holes in the tube, so tried to patch, but the fucking leaking slime breaks the glue and the air keeps escaping, so i had to walk back home about 2km of dusty hell.

also fuck big truck owners. they don't slow down while passing you and you end inside a thick cloud of dust. not only annoying but dangerous; while in the cloud, another asshole in a truck almost hit me while going 100kmh through the thick dust.

tl;dr, my rides are pretty shitty thesde days.

Took the second 100k+ ride in my life yesterday. First half i felt really crappy, then after some food 60km into the ride i felt better and just had tired legs. Had an average speed of 27ish km/h.

Current goal is to be able to do a 100k holding 30km/h without feeling like dying during or after so i guess i got a lot of work to do.

Nice view from a bridge i crossed.

Also doing a 96k race this Sunday, wish me luck.

was at the airshow today. Saw some A10s, FA18s, some propellerbois pulling mad stunts, and other flying things. I was delivering in the area, it was raining and I didn't have my real camera so have this potato photo of mostly rage cages stuck in traffic with propellerbois in the sky. I was able to take a 30 minute break from work and catch more of the airshow again. Better photo today but still using the potato. The annual airshow is always a good display. RAF Red Arrows, F22 doing the Pugachev Cobra, and more, same as yesterday.

I feel your pain. I broke my left foot a few years ago, re-broke it due to being retarded and putting stress on it too soon, and now I still can't ride for more than 2-3 hours without having to take a long break to reset two toes into their sockets and then massage the foot back to life. Then I'll feel like a cripple the next day. Foot doctor says they can't do shit.

Slow flat today, was slow enough I got to somewhere I was planning to stop anyway. As I suspected the puncture was at the location of a slash in the tire tread. The casing threads are broken at that spot so I was able to see the new tube through the tire. Grabbed last year's front tire from the basement to use as a replacement.

Filled crack of cut tire with shoe goo and put a patch on the inside in case I want to try using it again. Chances are I'll just get a fresh set for next season. I'm tempted to get a set of 700x32 GP5000 for next year, but I'm pretty sure they won't be durable. Its weird that CRC and Bike24 are both about half the price of Wiggle despite them both being owned by Wiggle.

Its annoying how some seatposts have really long saddle rail clamps. My Brooks Pro with its short rails won't go far enough back on my 0 offset post, and won't go far enough forward on my offset post because of the clamp.

I'm gonna assume the post clamp is over designed and sawed off a 1/4" from the back.

A real shame Lucas Brunelle did most of his longer videos before small HD cameras existed. Hard to believe the stuff he did with 2 heavy camcorders strapped to head. Barreling through red lights without turning his head so as to not mess up his shots.

I was about 25 km into a ride last night when I got the "gotta take a dump" feeling. Fortunately I was just tooling around somewhat close to home. Which was good because I just barely got home in time before being hit with a case of diarrhea.

Better luck on today's ride, 100 km no issues. I'm one ride away from reaching 10,000 km for the year. Also just 500 km away from reaching 100,000 km since I started keeping track the year after I got back into riding following a decade of post high school laziness.

Looking at my chart of previous years riding I'm at the same distance for the time of year as my top 2 years. Fall weather should be the determining factor of whether I set new annual distance PR. Kind of aiming for a bit over 16,000 to make it over 10k miles.

Went for a 3 km ride to the edge of the city to watch some lightning. I can't remember the last time I went for a ride without taking my Garmin. Didn't bother putting on my cycling gloves or shorts either, which felt a bit odd like I was sitting to low.

Tried taking some pics, but my camera is useless for lightning. I should have kept my ancient 5 MP Canon, that one allowed for much more manual control.

I'm not the baggy guy. More of an interactive map than a chart. I've covered pretty much everything that I can reasonably ride in just 2019, roughly 2,800 km of unique roads / paths.

Green line is city border. Most of the lines outside that are roads that just go to random people's farms and I have no intention of doing those as I'd likely just encounter aggressive dogs.

Inside the city the largest uncovered spots are: sewage treatment plant, dump, refinery and police academy. I'll never cover any of those but I leave them on the map anyway. Another small cluster are roads that don't exists yet. Most of the rest are roads in commercial zones behind gates.

That particular tracking thing is something I've been using to create an overlay map for my Garmin Edge 800. But it also has its uses on my computer as a tool for seeing places I needed to go. Even without having a GPS it could be useful for keeping track of where you've been. I made a setup guide for it a while back. The basic process is to download your local road network, and delete the stuff you have ridden. Since I do a bunch of OpenStreetMap editing I just used some of the free programs available for that. The JOSM editor will easily display hundreds of gps traces at once so you can prune out the roads you already covered. Whenever I'd do a new ride I'd just load the gps trace and delete some more roads. The program supports a variety of background maps including OSM and Bing satellite.

There is a website now that does the matching using data from Strava, which is probably good enough for most people and requires no effort. Depending how your local paths and roads were mapped on OSM, some won't be included for matching, as the site excludes service roads and footways. http://wandrer.earth

Strava's Personal Heatmaps (a paid feature) are another way to track city coverage. http://www.jonathanokeeffe.com/strava/map.php does something similar using Strava data but is less permanent, they cache your rides for a while but I'm not sure how long.

If planning to use gps traces and want functionality similarish to the above 2 options, I also put together a guide for creating an offline gps database that displays all your gps traces at once. One thing I like about that program is that it lets you create very high resolution images.

Just had a set of rockbros pedals crap out on me after just 2 months of riding. The bearing cage broke and retention nut failed with only about 1000 miles of riding. I heard rockbros made decent generics and clones but after this, I'll have a hard time trusting their garbage.

I used the park tool kit. Maybe I did it wrong. I used the bit of sand paper around the hole, applied some of the rubber, let that sit for 5 min then set the patch ontop and let it sit for a bit more.

use the scuffer especially try to minimize any seams that are within the patch size from the hole. blow off any dust
apply a thin layer of glue just slightly larger than the patch size around the hole. thin. the idea is that it will dry fast and not have a thickness that can roll/bounce around and fail. just put a dot down and use the mouth of the tube to spread it around. compare to the patch and make sure the glue area will reach the edges of the whole patch. re-apply a little glue if needed. there is no downside to going a bit large, but too small could fail.
peel off the foil patch backing without touching the patch surface or wrinkling the edge too badly
keep the plastic film on to handle and get the patch centered over the hole.
glue ought to be tacky by now
mash that patch down in the center over the hole and press outward. make sure the orange edges have contact with the glue layer all way around .
that's it. as long as the glue was dry when you applied the patch (and it dries pretty fast,) it's as strong as it'll ever be.

patched areas are stronger than the plain tube, so go nuts. you can ride with as many patches as you like for as long as you like.

NOW put the slightly inflated tube in the tire, fully deflate, and then onto the rim. use actual tire levers not screwdrivers or you'll fuck it up again.

Did an 24 mile ride this evening on one of my usual routes. It had about 85°F and the airstream while riding was nice.
A quarter mile after a pretty fast descent I've noticed that my rear tyre had lost all of its air.
I didn't notice anything during the descent itself and was happy that I didn't crash during the decent and that I've had a spare inner tube and a CO2 cartridge with me. Neither the tyre nor the old inner tube showed anything unusual and I suspect the valve itself as the cause. I run the tyres at 70psi which I don't view as too much pressure for a 25mm tyre.

My legs were stiffer today than they've been in a long time. Might have something to do with following up yesterday's 116 km with another 120 km today.

While I was organizing some things I came across some energy bars I made back in May so I started finishing off the last of them. Pretty good so I'll have to make some more. Still working on the best way to package them. Tried sandwich bags last year, but were a pain to open while riding. This year I wrapped them in aluminum foil which worked better, but the foil tears easily, so still a little tricky to open on the go.

I messed it up last year when I made them and they came out limp. I didn't realize the recipe called for the type of dates that come in a brick. I got the loose bagged kind that didn't require soaking in hot water.

Caught the train to the Goldy Coasty for my now pretty standard 50km leg. It was a beautiful day and i foolishly forgot to check the weather report. There was a 30km/h south easterly blowing and my route heading was south east. Bloody headwind absolutely wrecked me and i didnt pack clothes for the windchill after dark. Made me bust it out of there ASAP and didnt even get to enjoy fish and chips. Fug.

They chip sealed the highway shoulder west of me recently and didn't brush away the excess rocks, so I got a flat while riding on it. The rocks make it impossible to see all the usual debris that needs to be avoided.

And instead of immediately stopping to change the tube when I noticed it going flat, I tried to ride a bit further hoping to get to a cross road where I could get further away from traffic. In doing so I gave myself a pinch flat in addition to the puncture, so the tube had 3 holes in it now. I think I did that before, fixed one of the holes and put a punched tube back into my spares rotation.

I had a coyote run across in front of me on the way home. I happened to have my camera out as I was taking pictures of stuff while I was riding.

On the return leg of a 140 km ride today I saw a helicopter crop duster. I've only see crop dusting planes before. This time of year they are spraying desiccate on the canola to help it dry out. I noticed it just as it came in to land for a top up, was a pretty quick turn around as he was back in the air a few minutes later flying under power lines.

today I did the hardest ride I've done so far. I'm just starting to ride a mountain bike and did local single track with 1500 feet of elevation gain over 2.5 miles. Had to walk my bike up a lot of steep parts. Coming back down was really fun.
Also, someone stole the 40 dollar Big 5 trunk bike rack off my gf's car today by cutting the straps, rendering it worthless. Fucking tweakers. I hate living in the city

Did a little maintenance this evening including getting my road bike back in working order, since I have my touring bike setup for fall gravel duty.

The rear disc brake on my mtb was making noise since the last ride. I tried several times to adjust it with no luck, so I reluctantly removed the wheel and pulled the pads. They were worn out so the metal spring was hitting the rotor. Had to put the squealing stock pads back on until I get new ones.

Also reached 50,000 km on my Trek 520 today.

I took apart a pair of old m520 pedals for a regrease yesterday. I thought there was some play in the bearings but everything looked fine.

I was also trying to fix my mom's shitty honda civic keys that keep breaking. I had some bare carbon fiber so I floofed it a bit and mixed it with super glue to help reinforce the plastic. The first time it worked well, but something went awry when mixing a second little batch. I mixed it on the the same piece of plastic, something triggered the super glue to rapidly set. Poof of smoke, some heat and a frozen tangle of carbon fibers.

Its been like spring the past few days. I squeezed a ride in early Monday and its been raining ever since. Supposed to clear by tomorrow afternoon.

With a total of 50+ mm of rain gravel roads are going to be unrideable for at least half a week. But after that they'll be smooth and fast like a clay tennis court.

i did the 30th (and supposedly last) nyc century hosted by transportation alternatives this past sunday. the weather was great - sun with some clouds, about 75 degrees. i was mostly by myself or hopping group to group, then fell in with a couple chill bros for the last 30 miles. saw a few crashes and near misses. came up on a roadie who managed to snap his chain, he said his group just shrugged and left him. i had my chain tool so i put his shit back together and rode with him for a bit before he went to catch his group again. felt good to help.

Feels good man. Insanely high heart rate for this ride too, when I got on the bike I was at 90 whereas its usually 60. I thought that was bad but I just felt very strong for the entire ride and kept up the high heart rate. From that I can take that high idle heart rate = good day. I expected it to be the other way around desu.

For me its very low on weekdays when riding after work, and usually much higher when riding in the morning in the weekend. Power output doesnt change much but its a huge difference in heart rate. It does feel better with the higher heart rate though, I feel noticeably snappier, although when looking at the power data it doesnt seem like I actually am snappier.

Heart rate is a weird thing, its fun to ride with both power and heart rate to witness it.

I injured my lumbar muscles of my back sleeping. I hurt it on Friday night, went for my normal saturday ride and on sunday morning I couldn't get out of bed. Literally was contemplating peeing myself instead of walking to the bathroom it was so bad. I just got cleared to ride on Sunday by my doctor today who said I have to keep moving and walk on the treadmill and whatnot until then. He confirmed that I did not injure a disc merely muscle injury.

So until Sunday it's walking the treadmill at 1.8 mph and stretching instead of sweet sweet suburban tarmac and lake views. Luckily even though I'm an American I had some sick days left in the year so I just took this week off. Instead of going to work I've been picking up Mom and taking her to her gym and walking. The pre 9am Gym Krewe are characters, that's for sure.

I miss riding my bike on the road.

I just got back from my 3rd bike ride and I felt dizzy, like I had to throw up, and had really slimy saliva even though it was only around a 6 mile ride. Felt like it was uphill both ways and windy as hell. My body was literally shaking once I got off my bike.
Does it get better? I just wanted to go on a leisurely ride around the local lake.

Took my road bike out for the first time in over a year. I had some drive train issues with it last August. Replaced a chain and it started skipping, so I ordered a cassette and replaced that, still skipping, so I ordered a chainring something I should have done at the same time as the cassette. By the time I got all that sorted we were into a craptacularly wet September. Then in the spring I yoinked some parts to use on another bike. I finally got around to returning the bike to working order.

Really nice weather today. I decided to assume my last fit adjustment was good enough and went out for 100 km, and pleasantly enough it was. The road bike is quite a bit faster than my touring bike, really noticed the lower weight when accelerating.

I'm not sure if this old jeep gets used for anything. Its been sitting in a compound since I was in the reserves back in the mid-90s. Its not in horrible shape considering the Canadian military stopped using jeeps in the mid-80s (aside from not having a body).

Don't look at it as being bad, look at it as a baseline. If you look at your times when cycling and think "that's bad" you're gonna have a bad time.

Next practice you do make it your goal to beat that time by a few seconds and keep doing that every ride.

This way you reach your goal every, or nearly every ride and when you're smashing that time you can look back and see how far you've come.

I was excited to see news in my rss feed about a new bike path extension. Which turned to disappointment when I realized it was effectively a sidewalk so the city could steal money out of the cycling budget to create access to a school in the middle of nowhere (they built a school where a new development is going, but the development has been delayed by like 10 years). Using the path one would risk being hit by turning cars or having cars blocking the path while waiting at the stop sign for the road parallel to the path.

To add insult to funds being stolen from a useful project, they come right out and say the path itself will be completely redundant when the new development is built because there will be another path on the other side of the street.

The money they are taking is 1.5x the annual path budget, so they are also stealing $400,000 from a pedestrian rail crossing safety grant, despite there being no rail crossings.

Crashed on my morning commute, flew right over the handlebars. I THINK. I don't remember anything in between the instant I noticed something wrong when I got out of the saddle to accelerate to when there were people around me calling 911. Hit my head hard enough to crack and scrape the fuck out of my helmet and then tumbled onto my ass, which makes it hard to walk/sit now. Fuck the "hurrdurr who needs a helmet" fuckers. Was in the ER all day yesterday, CT scan showed no concussion, I'm just very butthurt now. I had a mild headache but it went away already. Right after the crash though my BP was so low I couldn't stand up without fainting. Before that I was going to just walk the rest of the way to work, it was only a block away.

I realized today since it happened immediately after getting out of the saddle, and that the medics found my chain stuck in between the frame and the freewheel that my knee probably hit the POS shifter in picrel. Bike is not mine but it's the same shifter. I usually cruise in 4th or 5th and probably knocked it to 7th with my knee, and it probably simultaneously dropped the chain off the freewheel while my foot dropped abruptly causing me to jerk the bars or something, because I vaguely remember the bars jerking or me doing it.
I'll post the damaged helmet next, I can't even get up to go get it by myself, have to have my wife help me get anywhere. X-rays showed no broken pelvis/spine either so I'll probably be ok in a few days.
I'm not gonna cheap out on bikes anymore FUCK. Fucking A050 shifters. I've knee shifted with them a shitton of times before and it was an annoyance, no big deal, but idk yesterday maybe something else went wrong, or I let my guard down.

That sucks man, hope you get better soon. I used to have those shifters and absolutely hated them, hit them with my knees all the time when out of the saddle and the action was so goddamn faggy it would ghost-shift at the slightest brush. 7speed Tourney brifters are a much much better option for a cheap commuter.

I think I'm going to go single speed and put a chaincase on it so minimal chain maintenance, my commute is flat and I stay in one of two gears for most of it anyway.

Aww, what a shame. Didn't realize it was a hemp strain. My state is legalizing recreational in the coming year, makes me wonder where they're going to get their supply as it's still illegal at the federal level along with the neighboring states. Our farmland is better used for food as we're the corn and bread basket region of America but there's projections for insane demand on the tasty strains here in the coming years. 20 mph probably. I thought it was 16-17 but the last speed on strava before ambulance speeds looks to be 20 mph. I didn't stop the ride until I got home so this has the car ride home too.
The helmet is just a cheap $25 Walmart one. They have cheaper but at the time it's the only one that fit my big head.

I sent one of my headlights away to get upgraded, so I used my IXON IQ Premium on the handlebars tonight. Despite being 2x as powerful as the non-premium version it still isn't much light. Nice beam pattern though.

I had my bright light on my helmet so I could light things up really nice when needed. Today the cells started rattling around inside the battery pack I rebuilt a year and a half ago. I should probably open it up and re-secure the cells before something bad happens.

Went out for a 100 km ride just before 6 tonight. Plenty of darkness was enjoyed. I've been have trouble getting the camera traffic lights to detect me all year, tonight I had the opposite problem at one. It detected me so early it was impossible to reach the intersection before it went red again.

spring is here and to celebrate i did a 2 day bike camping trip.
nothing too long, 130km total, but so nice.
weather was perfect, the river is still a bit cold but not enough as to not to take a swim, and the sky was amazingly clear so the nights were super starry.
a nice cabernet sauvignon is always a good company.

On my 51km ride last Tuesday. The air and weather was that clear one could see the Alps (which was a nice reward for reaching the highest point of the tour).
15 minutes after the picture was taken I drove over some small stone which slit the tyre's sidewall causing a puncture a few hundred meters further. Didn't make it home before darkness and was happy that I've had my lights with me.
"Fixed" the tyre with some wire harness tape from the inside at home as the slice was only 5mm long and already put about 150km on it since then. I'm torn between keep riding with it or replacing it although there's still a lot of life in it.

Did a quick squizz in the city, planning to hit the mountains (road/climbs) next week after I get some practice.

I still know how to drive the bike, but I find myself seldom reaching for my highest gear, when I could maintain a good cadence on it before. And the traffic is suddenly so daunting. I used to be able to breeze through all the tite gapz in a 4-lane highway, and merge effortlessly at speed and cross the stoplights, all that. Now they make my butthole clench. Also my butt hurts even with the chamois.

How long before I'm young again, and shine like the sun?

well, son, a man has to do what a man has to do.

nah, 130km total, 3 legs of about 40something done at a very mellow pace.
i've camped 2 nights in 2 different sites, one in a lagoon, and one in the river.
the skillet was for a pork cut that we call "bondiola" (i guess is pork shoulder) that is delicious, and for the eventual fish i didn't managed to catch at the river.
but adding to the skillet and wine, i've carried about 800g of pork in a small icebag, a loaf of bread, coffee and a small volturno coffee maker, a couple small jars of different seasonings and a can of stout to cook the bondiola.

i don't always go full retard, but outdoor cooking is strong in me.
