>>1376299I'm also not him but I despise those soulless layer cake yachts and the loathesome conspicuous consumption richfags that own them.
They don't care about sailing, or boating culture, or any authentic quality at all. It's just another thing to compete with the other upperclass twits and one up each other.
I saw a documentary about yachts in Monaco and a designer was cautioning a buyer against commissioning a longer yacht than would fit in a dock slip (prince so and so has a 100 ft yacht! I want a 110 ft one!) by saying "if your ship is too long you'll have to use a launch to ferry guests to your mooring and nobody will come to your parties". It's disgusting, like dogs in a butthole sniffing circle.
If you see some bloke in boat shoes and crisp white clothes at the helm of a gorgeous wooden schooner you know that not only does he have money but he also enjoys the culture and takes it seriously. Compare a wine enthusiast to some jagoff who orders "the most expensive bottle you have" to impress a date.
I won't pretend that I don't want to have that kind of money but I'd have a nice Edwardian steam yacht and sail around the world in it forever.
