Up north, it was worse. In 1962, after the Beeching Report, the Northern Ireland government got an accountant who worked at what became PwC, Henry Benson, to work out what to do with the railways.
The Benson Report said that all but the Larne and Bangor lines should be closed down, and the line to Lisburn reduced to a single track, and the rail convention to Dublin dismantled completely. The Ulster Transport Authority.
Some lines were spared, but some were killed off. Several lines which were dismantled were rebuilt into highways instead.
