Is it feasible to travel Japan by bike? How long would it take to go through most of the major cities?

you would be interested in the Cycle Around Japan video series done by NHK and the Japanese department of Tourism, gaijin.

just snag a few eps off of youtube. It looks like the coasal areas are easiest and comfiest in terms of rural life.

It's so geographically compact that you'll never be more than a couple hours ride at most away from a convenience store or someones house to ask for water or some tiny 1l pickup truck passing you to give you a lift into town if you get a mechanical
And you can leave your bike with bags on it outside anywhere and nothing will be stolen. Other tourists are basically the only people to be cautious of.
Japanese people also really like both cycling and camping/nature so there are a lot of good facilities for it and protected areas and hot springs.

Some issues:
>you can't take your bike on a train without breaking it down and putting it in a bag
>japanese people don't understand sarcasm or banter and you may find small talk extremely inane
>in some places you won't find many english speakers
>endless ugly urban sprawl
>you have to be veryyy contentious to not offend anyone and no one will tell you when you do anything wrong - hopefully this is a good rather than bad thing and you'll be conscious of it
>if you fall in love with a japanese qt and try to stay there you will always be considered an outsider and resented
>100 million people on a tiny island

Aside from the Eastern plains it's mostly mountains. Be sure to have really low gears (say 20") and to be in shape.

Didn't some youtuber cycle around japan a few months ago? He didn't even have some lightweight road bike and he seemed to be doing fine.

A lightweight road bike is worse than a heavier touring bike. It has very high gear unfit for climbing mountains while loaded, has no braze-on/eyelets to fit a carrier/lowrider and will behave weirdly if loaded.

Definitely possible but realize touring Japan is equivalent to touring the east coast of the US with more mountains. A lot of Japan is condensed in the Tokyo and Osaka metropolitan areas though. You'd need a ferry to cross Hokaido to mainland and then the southern islands.
