yow friends, ned help with wheels.
wanna upgrade my stock wheels of my road bike (a felt F75,its a alu bike kinda like a caad10).

i aint got crazy budget, somethin like 300-400usd for the set, maybe a bit more cause i know its little. was looking at campy zonda's , but in some places i read there are better more modern options for the same budget, but they don mention what.. so here i am, total newbie to wheels.

btw: dont want too big profile, 40 max i think. thaknssssssss

With this budget, i‘d buy a set of used Mavic Ksyrium SL. Almost indestructible and pretty light around 1400g.

You can always buy wheels for $50 on amazon if you want to literally bolt an anchor to your bike. OTOH if you ever want to crack 10 mph you need 8 inch deep carbon fiber rims (with aero spokes) that weigh less than a pencil and will collapse underneath you in a month.

Universal probably farms their work out to QBP's wheelbuilding operation. At least that's what I assume because they're a big QBP dealer and their mechanic churn is high, so I can't imagine that they do in-house wheels anymore. QBP does a good job, although I doubt that they don't get autistic about tension mapping as some builders do. Recently I had QBP build a wheelset using Pacenti Brevet rims with a SON dynohub front and Suntour Superbe rear, 28h both ends, and they've already survived some gnarly off-road rides.

Because making wheels reliable, lightweight, and roll smooth requires higher precision manufacturing with tighter tolerances, which is more expensive. Since the market for nice wheels is small due to most people not knowing or caring about the difference in quality, economies of scale don't come into play very well, so accordingly the prices are higher.

I've ridden chink carbon wheels for over 10 000 km over 5 years. Never had a single problem with them. Recently switched to them as my main set of wheels. Also just ordered a chink gravel frame to replace my old cx frame. Just get your shit from reputable manufacturer and it'll be fine.

Yeah, QBP's operation is called Handspun. That page makes me even more sure that Universal sells wheels through Q now because Q has warehouses in Lancaster PA and Reno NV, and on that page you can order wheels to ship from PA and NV, even though UC only has stores in OR and PA. Yeah, when I go to get a new set of MTB wheels for my 29er XC it's probably going to be Yoeleos laced to DT 240s. My current wheels are bullshit. For racerbois, Yoeleo has more UCI legal wheels than FS. Beats the shit out of spending $2K+ on Boras.

I'm debating about getting Novatec hubs instead of fancy Gucci hubs to my next sets of wheels. I have a pair already on my commuter bike and they've been great so far. Can't really tell a difference between them and my road wheels with 240s as hubs. Other than the 240s have shitty geometry and make for flexy as fuck rear wheels that will rub brakes in sprints when laced to deep section carbon rims.

I've ridden them 5 days a week for the last 3 years and ~15 000 km through rain, snow, and salt. Just took the end caps off for the first time last week to check which I need to get since I'm getting a new frame with different axles. The bearings still looked and felt great. I'm still gonna replace them when I get the new frame but desu I'm more than impressed with them. I didn't expect them to be this good when I got them and only got them because I didn't have that much disposable income back then and needed new wheels. And even if they needed more frequent bearing replacement quality bearings are cheap as fuck.

Now that I have money to buy the latest and greatest I'm buying chink carbon frames and wheels not because I can't afford the brand names but because I don't see the benefit of doing so. I've ridden the brand name products and honestly can't tell the difference between them and quality chink products.

Novatec is probably the biggest name in chinese hub manufacturing. They also make cheaper hubs for kids bikes and shit like that under the name Joytech.

As for knockoffs, they use the same red and white in their logo and both make hubs, so there's that. I don't think novatec leans so hard on their precision swiss engineering in their marketing, though.

Even most of the boutique brands. The new Schmolke frameset is made by workswell and they were so lazy they didn't even bother removing the original model name from the geometry charts.
