i live in nyc and am familiar with this incident and where it happened. both the "cyclist" and the parent share blame ~75% "cyclist" and 25% parent. i say "cyclist" because the faggot that hit this kid was a kitted-out boomer on a citibike (bikeshare) and was totally being a piece of shit - riding way too fast, yelling at people to move, trying to push hard through a congested section of MUP on peak weekend hours. the parent should have exercised more care in how they let their child move around the space - the kid ran in front of the "cyclist". it is a shared path with markings for who belongs on which side, and there is a shit ton of green space right next to the MUP for kids to run around and do kid things. they were walking down the middle/wrong side and the parent wasn't holding the kid's hand as they should've been.

To be fair the vast majority of cyclists are complete idiots. I'm amazed at the shit I see other riders do when I'm out riding. So many of them just sail through blind intersections without looking. Just pure chance and driver reaction time that has kept them alive. I try not to assume a motorist is automatically at fault unless the facts suggest otherwise.

there's quite a bit of doubt that this guy was even hit, its possible that a cyclist wasn't involved at all. only one eye witness, and no camera footage of this happening. medical examiner did not find injuries consistent with being hit and falling. look at this fucking guy - probably stood in the bike lane, looking the wrong direction, woolgathering or whatever.

Amsterdam still had an intact society. The American social fabric has disintegrated in most places. Best to think smart and move somewhere that will allow you to keep your hobby, in my opinion that is a city with extensive, connected, usable bike paths

Also it's so narrow already that even the small width of a cone isn't negligible and will create even less room. The real solution is for the DOT to get their shit together and either covvert a lane on the road deck to a wide protected bike lane or, and this is probably never going to happen, widen the existing ped/bike area.

I got hit and run by a truck on the bored of two town.
Not only did I push/drag my mangled bike past a cop, when I went to the police just to get a statement, not even to press charges, just get a statement that it happened so that my insurance would cover sewing my eyebrow back on, all they did was send me back and forth between both stations. I was at both at least twice before someone was willing to say it happened there.

They just don't give a fuck. I'd say you'd have to get caught red handed to be in trouble when you hit a cyclist but you can be on fucking tape and still get away with it.
