I have to wonder how much of it was just passenger image. The average customer probably couldn't tell a 737-200 and a brand new A320neo apart if they were parked side by side, but the MD80 is instantly recognizable and it looks like a plane from a bygone era. It's made even worse by the fact that it looks roughly similar to regional jets that pax associate with shitty flights.

The Md80's still have at least a couple years left of life in them for American. DUI Doug sucks Airbus dick too so that doesn't help them much either. Crandall and the MD-80's got American through 9/11 and made them how big they are today.

I can't say anything about American, but Delta is actually slowing down their A220 orders and planning to keep running their MD-88s and MD-90s a while longer. So there's probably some good reasons to keep them around, and American either doesn't think the reason(s) are good enough or just has shit management. Second option is true regardless.

There is a labor battle brewing between IAM/TWU and AA management.

AA doesn't want to guarantee that they wont ship current A&P jobs overseas when the mechanics retire.
So...the easiest way to get their way is to eliminate the oldest plane that the highest seniority mechanics have worked on

Granted, there are many more factors at play...but this is one of them.

If you eliminate their baby, you eliminate their efficiency and make it more appealing to retire/take severance when the new labor contracts come out.

Then you can lay off the thousand or so new AMTs they hired at Tulsa and ship the heavy maintenance overseas to be more profitable for the board/shareholders.
