What the bike snobs hate to admit is, while there was a difference in paying big money back in the 80s and 90s for bikes, because of the better quality coming from USA, UK and Germany, now just about every bike is made in China, with chinesium and "assembled" in the US, UK and Germany now. For people not bombing down mountains playing X-games and taking massive jumps or trying to play BMX bandit around town, a cheap big box bike is just fine. While there are many youtube videos that are glorified infomercials for your local bike shop and want you to buy a bike starting out at $400 just to pedal around town on. Avoid the videos that are click bait, that have the youtubers buying a big box bike and going straight to a double black diamond bike park trail and destroying the bikes. These are done in bad faith. They want you to think the bikes are trash from big box stores, but in reality, they would never treat their high dollar bikes that their sponsors gave them for free, the way they treat the cheaper bikes they destroy. Notice how they all take them straight from Wal Mart without tightening down anything, checking tire pressure or truing up the wheels/derailer. All big box stores never put the bikes together correctly to prevent people from riding the bikes in the stores. Also- if you havent had a bike with gears for years, actually watch a video on how to use bicycle gears, because it has changed since I was a kid, with 3 up front and 9 in the back, and you will break a chain/damage your cassette if you don't know what you are doing.
