I recently learned that school buses have to stop at railroads for the entire nations (US). I thought it was just my liberal state. Are school buses even efficient? I feel like every time I see them they are empty. Which makes me more upset when they stop me in the middle of my commute for a every single fucking train track in its path. Why am I even paying for these things with my taxes?

This is the only thing I could think of. But is there a chance that they really are more efficient than kids being driven by other means? and is it really socialism if the people making monies off of buses are for profits companies i.e. gas stations and bus manufactures? This sounds more like forced capitalism or is it socialism by being retarded and inefficient use of resources. I tried looking for articles and papers for these questions online but I found nothing

If I recall correctly, school bussing was introduced because the safety of the pupils suddenly became the school's responsibility from they leave home until they are back home, rather than from when they enter the school until they leave, opening up schools to massive lawsuits should a child be run over by a motorist while biking/walking to school. It's all part of the (((plan))) to make us obese, sick and slaves of the television, myaaan.

Is that why there are still over 2,200 crossing collisions with 270 deaths a year in your country? I mean, it's a small number compared to the other 30,000 or so people dying in American traffic every year, but it's a big number compared to the 140 collisions and 28 deaths a year here in Germany.

If the argument is that schools are hedging against lawsuits and death then I'll accept the overuse of school buses. I was also wondering if you can privatize busing for kids and make it cheaper and more efficient but I guess it comes back to minimizing risk for kids. Even at the cost of productivity, the environment, or the enjoyment of everyone involved.

I don't. Schools shouldn't be liable for such lawsuits in the first place. The responsibility for the safety of the child on its way to/from school should ultimately fall on the shoulders of the parents. Now, the immediate responsibility for the child not to be hit by motorists should fall on the motorist who destroys the child. Slave labour for the rest of the motorist's life I think would be appropriate.

But to entertain you, maybe if there was a more extensive and robust public transportation system in most US towns, school buses would not be needed. They are needed currently because if every parent drove the 3-6 miles to drop off their kid, traffic on local roads would be even worse than the nightmare it already is.

school buses are usually kept and stores and maintained at a central location, so unless you're near a school you probably rarely see them with kids because they go on their route, pick up kids and drop them off then return to the bus barn.

I live in a small TX town and the high school has some full size busses but all the elementary and middle use what looks like an oversized van. they still stop at crossings and are not allowed to make a right turn after stopping on red like cars can. Sometimes the elem. school will use big busses for field trips, my wifes a teacher, she says it's easier with one bus on trips. And the HS needs the big ones for out of town sports games. Out in the country here the busses and vans stop at the kids house for everyone of them, can be a small problem if you're in a hurry, The farm to market and ranch roads only have a few passing areas so you get stuck for the whole ride.
