I like the way sound carries at night. When approaching an intersection I can tell if there is a vehicle coming just from the tire noise. Its interesting seeing how the lighting conditions have changed as streetlights get replaced with LEDs. All the light from them is on the ground, and when you look down the street you barely see the streetlights themselves.

In the city I don't need much light. But on the MUP its good to have a helmet light to see around curves. Lots of people walking in the dark. Its weird when someone is out there with an unleashed dog that has a light on its collar.

Great sunsets this time of year with all the harvest dust in the air. Should be a nice full moon rise coming up on the 13th.

Same here. I still ride in the dark because in winter thats the only time I can ride at all on workdays. I do avoid a lot of areas at that time though.

It's weird, I can only ride with music in my earbuds during dusk, for some reason it calms me. Can't stand music otherwise and always have some audiobooks or podcasts loaded instead.
Visibility is an issue, cagies rarely bother to switch to softer lights when incoming so it fucks with your night vision and you constantly go readjusting to the dark, I feel like it tires the eyes quite fast. Some kind of infrared handlebar lamp would be the shit.

Once upon a time I used to do all my training rides during the week after work, so unless it was the height of summer I ended up in the dark. Then I flipped things around and started getting up at 4am to ride before work, and that worked out better especially in summer when it would be so hot even at dusk. These days I work a swing-shift job so I can get up at 8am and roll out of the driveway by 10am and do all my riding in the daylight, before going in to work at 3pm. So I've run the complete gamut of when to ride.

yeah this is me, or used to be anyway. it's how i got into cycling. it's hard to believe i've been posting on /n/ on and off since 2010 now that i think back on it. my only usable bicycle used to be some pos department store mountain bike that didn't even gear shift correctly, i used to do 12 mile round trips from and to my front door and take detours to look at stuff, see what it's like downtown almost totally deserted etc. too bad the summer is over. my bike that i upgraded to and have ridden since 2011's not in good shape and i'm scared the carbon fork might fail among other things, it needs a lot of work done to it. i miss cycling bros.

One of mine has been slipping lately. Not much, maybe once or twice a week. But that will likely increase as the weather gets colder. I had a freehub freeze in the disengaged state halfway through a winter commute once when it was around -15C, that sucked.
