How would you feel if your city had free bus services? Do you think having such services is a good thing?

Pic related is the GOKL free bus service in Kuala Lumpur. As a local I've taken it many times and it is alright. The buses are well maintained and frequencies are around 10-15 minutes, only downside is the traffic in certain parts of the city. And it seems that most of the people who take it are foreign workers and tourists.

didnt really used it much but buses are used mostly by pensioners and kids to get to school so its not that bad i highly doubt public transport in other cities makes profit anyway the bad think is i didnt notice any decreese in numer of cars which would be surely nice

That's true. Aside from free buses we also have monthly pass system which is for locals only since it's used via our ID cards and you can travel all you want on train and bus around the greater city, but so far it only has an effect on those who already frequently use public transport.

I think it would be great if public transport was financed through taxes alone, since it benefits everyone equally. The greatest idea would be to put a toll on cars entering the inner city while at the same time drastically improving public transport.

There are benefits with having fares, more income = more services can run per subsidy dollar, or better quality services, or invested into expansion. Putting a price on it moves journeys off public transit to walking/cycling etc where practical, or not making the journey at all, go too high though and it's also pushing journeys toward cars/taxis.

However, understand that when our country was older and less cucked by autolobbyists, not everything was a mega Walmart shopping center, and it made sense to go ahead and get groceries by the week or hop on down to the store.
As urban planning increasingly became car centered, no shit, it becomes near necessary to have car.

This isn't a failure of public transport, but of your own time management and a lack of forethought on the peabrains like you.

Nah, I live on my own in the city. I'm autisically into cars, but I just don't need one anymore, and it's silly to have one here in the city, so I put her out to pasture and uninsured her when I finally swapped my ID over to the proper state.
The trolley takes me right from my corner, where I wait for it on my porch, and takes me right to Center City, and I can connect to many other bus or rail lines from the trolley with ease and for usually no extra fair at the free interchanges.
Everything else can easily be done via bicycle, and my only criticism is the inability to take it on most trains or whatever.

It's an old city, and as a consequence, the grocery store is two blocks away and I don't have a designated grocery day, I just walk over there when I need something. Sometimes even twice a day when I forget something, to no harm to me or my time.

You cannot defend pic related, bud. And this side of America would not be made possible without over reliance on personal automobiles.

*There is no 'free time' to 'manage better', it's *full*
Weekends are for taking care of things that are only open during the daylight hours, and for more riding.
There is no time to take slow-ass shitty public transit everywhere. Some of us have actual lives to live, so STFU, NEET.

That's a typical attitude among college students and young adults. They think because love living in cities now, in their youth when it's fun to put up with all bullshit city life entails, they'll want to live there forever. I thought that way when I was in college too, and many of my friends did as well. It doesn't take very long to get tired of intown living, especially with kids. It's why most people eventually move to a suburban community.

Considering most of the people riding busses are lower income, getting rid of fares would be a progressive move.

Would probably get rid some cars off the road per the convinence and allow people from out of town to move more freely. All and all, I'm for it.

First, you don't get to pick and choose what your taxes go towards. That's not how the tax system works. It goes into a pool of total revenue that is used for expenditures. Your taxes don't go towards any specific thing.

Secondly, public transit is a public good. Not everyone will use it but it is, on a whole, a benefit to society. And if public transit didn't exist, then everyone that currently uses it will be clogging up the roads. Even if a bus is half full, that can be upwards of twenty to thirty people. How would you like it if instead of 30 people in one bus, it was the same 30 people in 30 cars, and traffic was even worse?
