A better option would be to get the fastest racing bike you can afford. Recumbent are over rated speed wise.

Things that a recumbent cannot do well:

Glide between queues of cars at traffic lights.
Avoid pedestrians on the cycle path.
Jump curbs.
Go full speed safely unless the road is clear.
Lock anywhere. People will trip over it.
Carry up stairs.

The bike plebs would be too slow for you to see them chimp out at seeing the next evolution in portable self propelled transport. Electric motor assisted Recumbents are probably the best bet considering the speed you can achieve will make anyone reconsider their ignorant opinions.

The flevobike is a exotic type of 'bent. It is fun as hell to ride, though.
