Just getting into spring, mornings are still cool. Harvest won't start for another month or so, roads aren't wildly dangerous yet. Once summer gets here the heat can be a bit brutal. I'm mostly riding the commute to and from work, hoping to do a bit of bike packing in the next week, I have leave booked. Riding is fun.

New cyclist with a 90's rigid MTB. Did a shitty 5 mile bout that left me gassed. It also didn't help that there was a decent head wind and I didn't realize until afterwards, but my cantilever brakes that I thought were dialed in were actually rubbing against the wheels...

yesss... i have the same feelings, where i live spring is one of the best times of the year to ride.
i mostly ride on rural dirt roads, but as you say, once harvest starts, it can get a bit annoying.
i also enjoy the fact that you get more daylight hours, so riding after work is super relaxed and you get to see beautiful sunsets. i'm not into bikepacking (yet) but i do some biketouring and you can ride more hours, or make a nice lunch/nap brake at noon and still have a lot of time to ride.

where in the southern hemysphere are you, anon?

check your brakes, though, and the rest of the gear. long rides can be smooth and sweet, but in a unadjusted bike are a pain in the ass.

All my rides these days are at least 2 hours, but because it got dark early I decided to go all out for a shorter time. This was quite painful but also satisfying that I was able to be nearly dying for such a long time. If it wasnt for the hard wind and annoying cars im sure it could have been 40kph average, but thats for another day.

I also never knew I could hold 300 watts for so long, I always assumed by FTP was around 280 or so. Very happy about this ride desu lads.

today was rough. I was too stubborn to wear my rain shell before the thunderstorm hit. It was downpouring at 60F but by then I was too soaked to care about wearing my shell. Then wind chill kicked in. Some dude called me a badass for riding in that weather, looked his way and gave him a thumbs up then hit a car that stopped in front of me. My front rack deflected most of the hit and I stayed upright. Did a few more deliveries before realizing I was losing too much body heat and riding hard isn't sustaining warmth anymore. Called it quits and headed home. Hot shower and soup made me feel better.

I've been wanting to see how well a mini ratchet works as a bike tool and picked one up today. Canadian Tire puts everything on sale eventually so I set up an alert and 2 months later this set was finally on sale again this week for $17. The set used to come with a case, but not anymore , it would have been too large anyway.

Cold today with my Garmin reading 2.5C at the end of the ride. Down to -4C tonight and cold tomorrow, will likely have to keep on the lookout for ice while I'm out. Chance of snow for the entire period between Saturday night and Tuesday night.

Every time I walk out of my office in the evening I get the feeling that I really want to ride my bike home and that it would feel amazing but I haven't done it yet because I don't have lights and a lock.

My winter hack is a road bike that my lbs stuck 32mm gravel tyres on it. Swapped the tread direction to "traction" and took it across some mbt trails. Saw a heron halfway through which was cool.

Only 140 km of riding this week. Crappy weather, but will be better by Tuesday. 5 - 10 cm of snow in forecast for tonight, but it won't be below freezing so the roads will just be wet. Would suck to be farming, less than 50% of harvest finished.

Beautiful fresh spring weather in Queensland. Bike is super clean, chain is waxed and got a new set of cleats. It does not get any better.

Been a bit lazy the past few weeks but im primed to spin some real distance this weekend. I gave my cleats a good washand I rode without the foam insert at the bottom of my shoes. Suprised it felt nice. Was not expecting that, more power too.

Fuck. Got a cramp on my right quad while climbing up a hairpin turn on a steep hill with a narrow road with heavy traffic. Good thing I was able to get my bike and myself out of the way before it set in, because I couldn't move my entire right leg for a good 5 minutes. First time I got a cramp from cycling ever, but this is also my first >60mile ride in a couple of years, just picked up cycling again 2 weeks ago. I guess I should take it easier. That was hairy.

well, it's in ruins, judging by the size and kind of the remaining bricks it was built about 150 years ago (which is ancient history were i live. probably the last time used was about 80/ 100 years ago, and it has been looted and set on fire, and the ruins have been engulfed on bushes and tall grass.
there are the remains of an "aljibe", one of those rope and bucket wells, i don't know the name in english.

3C when I went for a ride this afternoon. Saw several cormorants down at a creek, one was semi submerged like a little lochness monster. I came across a bunch of timber mats laid along a pipeline right of way, so I took advantage of the improvised pathway.

Nothing but cold and wind in the forecast.

Miserable wind on the way home today. This evening I modified the style settings I use when generating updated maps for my Garmin. Finally got around to making the different categories of roads appear in different colors. Made alleys easier to see, and made the lines for parking lots smaller (before they shared the same line style so I couldn't change one without changing the other). Also made it so paved and unpaved paths look different.

I thought for sure he was in that lane to turn into a coffee shop right away, but nope he was not turning right for at least half a km. Drivers are so fucking stupid, always choosing to stay behind me when an adjacent lane is free. Maybe they assume I'll hug the curb and let them squeeze by in the same lane. No shoulder, I'm riding down the middle of the lane.

I rode around on some easements today. There is a noise berm between a freeway and houses that I followed, then I took a pipeline corridor back. The pipeline route still had some wood mats laid down which was a hell of a lot faster than riding on the grass.

I'm down to my last spare 9 speed chain, so I went to order more. The price is $5 more on Amazon then when I ordered them a year ago. So I checked ebay and can get them straight from Taiwan for the old price. I'm finding I've having to get more and more of my bike parts from ebay as fewer places carry a good selection of 9 speed parts.

Its looking like the new highway near me will open just as the daytime high temperatures level off to just above freezing.

58 miles with 2700ft of climbing.

Another issue with 9 speed is that various companies seem to be collapsing their consumables product lines into fewer products. Last year I went looking for a replacement cassette, and all the results under the old product number were very expensive. It seems both the XT and Deore cassette parts were discontinued and replaced with the HG400 which is heavier then the XT but lighter than the old Deore.

Took my fat bike out for the first time since the snow melted. It was so slow. Left pedal was clicking like crazy on every pedal stroke. I've got the tool to remove the axle, so I can adjust the bearing cone to take out the play which should get rid of the noise.

Got the pedal bearing tightened up tonight. That's the second set of high mileage SPDs this year that I noticed the left pedal was considerably more worn than the right. Very likely due to me putting my right foot down when stopping, so the left pedal takes my weight when coasting and for the initial push off.

New motorway finally opens next Tuesday after 3 years of construction. Its going to create a ton of options for highway ride loops, and . And will eliminate the convoluted route I have to take to get out of the city when going north. I'm going to try to do a loop of the city next week which is about 100 km, but the temperature is supposed to be near or below 0C.

Little bit of snow last night, and cold enough for it it to stick around, at least on the unpaved alleys and paths. An hour and 40 minutes on my fat bike and my legs were dead. Its takes a while for my legs to adjust to the fat bike after not using it all summer. The -5C temperature would have been fine if it wasn't for the 30 gusting to 50 km/h wind. More snow tomorrow which should stick around until late in the week.

I wish there were more places to ride like in my picture. Its a 100 foot section on an island in the park. Everywhere else is fairly wide open.

Did a nice 43km ride yesterday, they call it a River-loop(Brisbane Australia), surprisingly flat(571m), took just over 2 hours.
I've been meaning to do it again for ages, the last one I did was almost a year ago because I mostly ride for commuting.

All in all it was pretty nice, my front wheel is a little out of true so I'm going to have to fix that later.

Also did Strava just change what their maps look like on their website because it was slightly surprising.

Got some hitchhikers today. I spent most of the ride chugging along through snowy grass easements between houses. Average speed 11 km/h. Its usually 50/50 whether there is snow by Halloween, but this is the most I recall in at least the last 10 years.

I did the "Build me Up" plan on Zwift from January to beginning of April this year, then kind of slacked off because the weather wasn't good enough to ride outside and I didn't want to sit on the trainer every evening. Throughout the summer I tried riding two times a week one day I did a 33km / 1h ride trying to push it, the other day a longer more endurance type of ride of 60 to 80 km. Apart from that I ran my usual 22km training run every weekend (which is the main sport I do, cycling was only meant to be supportive for the running at first).
Funny enough my best form cycling wise was beginning of April as I lost all of the gained strength again when I stopped riding in a structured way. Doing intervals on the road outside felt kind of silly.

During the race I had one water bottle on the bike which I swapped out at the second of the two support stations which were placed at ~35 and ~70km. I had two chocolate bars with me (Snickers / Twix) plus a jellylike powergel which was included in the bag with the start number. I only ate the Snickers at ~30km and the powergel at ~80km though as the Twix was completely melted.

anybody used a 360 action cam to film rides? I got the idea just from stories of people in my city saying that drivers hitting them have lied about circumstances to get out of fines/punishment. I figure a 360 cam on helmet would let me catch all angles and any obvious driver mistakes or intentional attacks would be easily captured. I was looking at the Insta 360 X One which has really good user reviews (that I can see). Only worry is that it's really tall, and has a short battery life. Don't want it hitting low tree branches, or dying a short time into the ride.

today I hit up Stub Stewart to do some mtbing and built up a shitload more confidence as a MTB rider than I had before the day started. The adjustments I made to bar length (chopped the fuck out of it) and seatpost (dumped the dropper for a rigid) really helped out. One very short section has an idiotically fun set of features. Ramp -> table -> drop -> ramp -> table -> drop -> bigass berm -> table. I went from going balls-in-throat skreeee at the first drop to sending it after a few sessions. Some poor dude broke his neck on the black diamond freeride trail that I didn't even think of doing, because my skills are still meh. It was right where there's a gap you can jump or do a wallride, and I guess he went jump and rip. hope he's actually ok but it didn't look good as the local FD carried him out in a neck brace and he was just staring at the sky

Saw a thing on a local strava club about a guy who was deliberately hit by a driver this week in a neighboring suburb. The guy had been riding around on the cart paths of a golf course after a snow. The course branches out throughout the suburb and isn't fenced at all with the cart paths crossing streets in many place. He was on a public road at the time and person who hit him claimed to be the owner before they drove off. I checked the course FB page and there was a post 3 weeks ago complaining about kids riding on the greens. Makes me wonder if that douchebag was looking to deliberately run down children.

Fortunately that's the first incident I can recall of someone deliberately being hit. Looking at his strava activity I could see a HR spike at the accident, then a detour to the police station before heading home.

My legs are starting to adjust to the fat bike, but a 2 hour ride still ends with me exhausted. I got a few touring bike rides in early in the week before it snowed again. Last 2 rides were pretty cold but tomorrow is going to be warm. Lots of temperature swings lately, from -22C to +4C.

Today the website wandrer.earth added a new feature that lets you download a Garmin compatible map that shows all the local roads you haven't ridden on yet. Its eventually going to be a paid feature, but is free for now. Extremely useful if you want to ride every road where you live.

Need some more snow to smooth out the rail trail. They are in the process of reactiving the line, but it probably won't see any use until next year. Its a local railway that mostly hauls grain. Until then it is a popular dog walking route.

It was warm, wet and windy today. I joined some people for a ride out at the nordic ski trails where there was still plenty of snow. There hasn't been enough snow for them to start grooming the trails. Once they start grooming the majority of the area is off limits to bikes and walkers.

Many above freezing days coming up. It would be nice to get a complete melt and for the roads to be dry again, but it seems unlikely since shaded areas are really slow to melt. So we will likely end up with lots of side street ice.

It got up to 4C today, but they were forecasting it to be 7 a few days ago. I waited for the wind died down so I didn't get out until 3 pm. For some reason I thought if I did a 75 km ride I'd be able to finish before it got dark, but had I looked at the sunset time I would have known better. At least I took lights.

All the specks on the road shoulder are large salt crystals. The roads were still a little damp, tomorrow when they dry out they should turn white from all the salt that is being used.

After today's ride I decided to order a second Ice Spiker Pro. Chain Reaction has the 26" wire bead on sale for half off.

I have one Ice Spiker Pro and and a Marathon Winter for my mtb. I used to run the marathon in the back, but I have a fat bike wheel I sometimes use in the front so I put the Ice Spiker in the back. I encountered a little ice today and the Marathon was awful as a front tire. Maybe several times the front wheel would slip sideways, the studs always managed to stop the slide but its still a shitty feeling. Maybe lowering the pressure would help, but I'd rather just have Ice Spikers front and rear anyway.

The roads and paths are pretty dry now, so I might ride without studs for a while since there is no snow in the forecast. I can completely avoid ice if I stay out of the alleys.

Today I learned the magic of that last gear on climbs. Made it so much easier keeping consistent cadence and breathing. For the first time I beat my much lighter friend to the top. Had a 21 km ride, 775 m elevation which I intend to do every weekend since I'm out of shape. The descent made it worth it.

Next time I get a hub / wheel I'm not getting anything less than XT level. The XT hub on my touring bike has been through all kinds of weather and never developed any play. I opened it once and the grease still looked like it was new. Excellent seals keep water from working its way in.

If a yarará bites, you immediately begin to have hemorrhages, edema, bleeding from the two holes of the fangs and may even have basal hemorrhages and bleeding disorders.
luckily they are not too aggressive, they usually try to hide, but if you step on one of them things can turn ugly.

40km along the nicest trail you can find where i live, along the river, between wheat fields and woods.
usually spring i far more rainy, but this time summer is close and the weather remains incredible.
flowers, birds, everything is vibrant green, fresh water in the river, ideal to swim in many small beaches, and absolutely no one around.
i think i'll go bikecamping on friday, scouted a few nice spots to lay a tent and spend the weekend.

you could do it, they are not too fast, specially in winter, but they are pretty dangerous all the same, and having them as pets really fall out of my circle of interests.

also they are really good for the environment, they eat lots of rats, which are common on dumpsters and vectors for a lot of diseases. also stray cats and dogs, the latters can be kind of dangerous to lone cyclists.

Fresh snow hiding all the ice underneath makes for unpleasant surprises while riding. My hands just won't stay warm lately. On several rides around -5C they have been going numb. I might need to start using my electric liners on most rides.

No, but thats what I found out later after I got home and did some work to try and get it off. My previous rims never had that well, or at least not that aggressively. Usually I just pushed it in a bit and popped in the tyre lever to get it off. But hey thats one of those things that you do wrong once and learn from it.

then my LBS did it and I looked how he did.
basically you need those tools, and a big amount of power concentrated to a small place, use leverage like forearm and shoulders muscles to pull from your fingers and use both knees to have a firm grip on the wheel, that's how I do it while sitting.
practice for the first times and get used to it

I actually have some $20 atv mitts I bought the same year I got my fat bike, but never tried them. They are very floppy with no stiffeners to maintain the shape. There are a pair of Rockbros ones on Amazon that look interesting, much cheaper than the other options.

It was around 2C when I went for a ride tonight. I was surprised the roads weren't too wet. With the warmer weather the most recent snow is finally bonding to the ice making for nice riding conditions. Nearly 3 hours of fat biking by the time I got home, really should have ate something mid-ride as my legs were fading toward the end.

No more above freezing days in the forecast, so the snow we have should stick around and the ice shouldn't get any worse. Still going to be pretty warm until Saturday, so I'm going to try getting out every evening to enjoy the Christmas lights and chase the white rabbits.

Global Fat Bike Day tomorrow. Snow conditions not good enough for me to make the 250 km drive to the big gathering in a neighboring city, so I'll just do the local one. Should be about 35 people at the local one, other city is probably going to get 100 more riders.

Its a little amusing when I go to these fat bike events. It can be -4C and half the people are wearing ski goggles. I usually don't consider goggles until at least -15C, and even then only if its windy.

One nice thing about the current minimal snow depth is being able to ride anywhere without bogging down. Once it gets deeper, you have to stick to a packed path.

These easements are perfect for winter fat biking, but most are pretty far from home. I'll have to hit the creek soon, but that is even further.

Stupid thing ran past me twice and on the third pass runs head on directly into my tire. Since I was on the fat bike I wasn't going fast and braked quickly, though it probably got a good poking from my studs.

It was only -7 with 30km/h wind, which isn't that bad. Fresh snow over ice, very normal for here. Most storms start and end with rain and the entire winter is slush and permanent ice. I often see my own tire tracks in the ice for weeks.

It was 60 gusting to 90 earlier this week. I ride in 40 degrees or -30, I don't care because I enjoy it. Consider posting about your daily rides instead of crying like a bitch perhaps?

Got out for the first time in just over a week. It was in the -20C range all week. Today was -10C with the wind gusting to 40 km/h. I would have stayed out longer if it wasn't for the wind. I gave my new pogies a try so at least my hands were warm.

First ride of the year with my ski goggles. With the goggles on there is a small part of my nose that isn't covered by either the goggles or my balaclava. I think I'll add a piece of neoprene to the center bottom of the goggles to block the remainder of my nose from the wind.

Hydrocolloid bandages work well if you have a sore that you need to ride on. They bond really well and can be left on for extended periods. Though if the sore is in a hairy area, good luck getting the bandage back off.

I was reminded about one of the shitty things about the roads here during the winter. Its cold most of the time so not much melting occurs. We can go weeks without any snow, but there is always ice at the traffic lights and 4 ways stops. Where does it come from? Moisture dripping out of vehicle tail pipes and freezing on the road. On busy roads it can really pile up.

Some nice Christmas light viewing weather coming up. Temperatures have been swinging like crazy lately resulting in a few stupid windy days.

I've been tinkering with my heated glove designs again and managed to come up with a better method to attach electrical wires to the carbon heat rope. Last year I wrapped the wires around the rope and superglued it in place, which had 2 problems. It proved to be physically weak and came apart, and in wrapping the wires I inadvertently made a heating coil creating localized hotspots.

New method is to strip some wire, use 20 cm length of 4 of the individual conductor strands like twine to tightly wrap around the wire to the carbon, squish it flat with some pliers, wipe on a little paste flux, tin with solder to cement everything together, then trim the excess. Later I'll cover the connection with plastidip. Very strong, no local heating, and a fraction of the size of the old splices. My plan was to order a spool of thin bare copper wire for the wrapping, but Amazon sent me the wrong stuff twice and I don't see other in country options for 30+ AWG wire that isn't enameled.

Did a hill climb that got cut short because a snow squall was about to rape me. 450 feet up but it killed me, im in no shape. Luckily i was at the top of my goal hill when i saw the storm rolling in, so i could make a speedy escape. Of course, as soon as i tried to take this picture the snow rolled it and raped me, but it was pretty fun actually. Had a nice quite backroad ride like 2 miles from home so i just enjoyed the barrage of winter and tried to stay warm.

The external bottom bracket on my fat bike hates that kind of slush. I think the issue was the lack of a vent hole at the bottom. Before I added a hole I was averaging 1 bottom bracket a season.

Almost didn't go for a ride this evening, but when I checked the weather and saw it was only -3C with no wind I couldn't resist going. Lots of brown mashed potato snow around, even on a fat bike that stuff can be tricky. Spent a few hours riding around looking at Christmas lights. My camera works better if I set a fixed ISO, in Auto it usually picks a shitty combination of settings. I used the max ISO, but that was too much so I'll try a lower setting next time I'm out.

There are a lot of shitty LED Christmas lights. The faceted C6 / C9 styles appear to have not been improved in 15 years. They lack brightness and vibrancy, with poor viewing angles. I like the mesh lights that have been out a few years now, quite dim but have an intense color.

I still come across a few houses using the old incandescent light sets. They cast a nice glow, but the colors are a bit dull.
