Fuck. Car2Go just announced that they are leaving the Portland market after October. This is not long after ReachNow also went away, and ZipCar has also been removing many of their spots.

What is a car-free occasional driver to do? What the heck is killing the car sharing market?

Car2Go was created by Mercedes as a way of dodging CAFE penalties and to dump Smart minicars that nobody wanted. Since they've brought their CAFE up and because brumpf has killed the plan to increase CAFE requirements in 2022, they don't need C2G anymore.

Not really. Cycling's mode share here is plummeting for various reasons (it's around 5% now, down from around 8 a few years ago), and public transit is decent for rail, unless you want to go east-west across downtown, because it stops every single fucking block. They're trying to cut stops to speed the trains up but of course retards are crying about it. Bus is dogshit. The local transportation agency, PBOT, is beleaguered due to poor leadership. It's still good relative to the rest of the US but is in a sharp decline that will continue until city hall gets an enema.

This just means that there will be more privately owned SOVs on the road. People who used C2G/Zipcar/Reach Now aren't going to switch to public transit or cycling.

Like that other anon said, Portland's cycling and public transit infrastructure is fabulous compared to most of the US. But that's a really fucking low bar. As a portlander I feel bummed out when people tell me our infrastructure is great when people still die all the time in car accidents. We still have so much to improve
