I would like to get into mountain biking but I am not sure what bike to get. Looking for something super budget. This would mostly be in Appalachia.

Go to Walmart and ask a member of staff. Everyone else here are bike snobs and think you can't get a good bike for so little money. But I have used those Walmart bikes on double blacks and A-lines. Just head to the store and they will keep you right! Look up KevCentral on YouTube for proof.

that's probably your point where diminishing returns begin to kick in and you're getting something somewhat durable. Although still bikes at that price point often have pretty awful forks.

I would just not suggest something with 7 speed or mechanical disc brakes. It's too crappy.

Entry level hardtail. Look for something your size, good suspension, good hydraulic disks, about in that order. Only then look at the drivetrain.

If you've got a good used market go for it, go ask the BBG.

Don't go below bikesdirect levels.

mostly this, but get a hardtail and ride the fork that comes with it until it pops, then buy something that is at least somewhat durable/servicable, do that and you'll have a bike that will serve you well for a long time with minimal outlay.

when starting off a second hand pos will do you just fine, you wont have the skillz to actually make use of even a £500 bike.
go on ebay or something or go to a recycling centre, thats where i got my mountain bike and its been pretty good, aluminium ovular tube frame will proper rear suspension.
when you start getting good enough that the bike is holding yo back you can either buy a proper one or just upgrade the cheap one

I don't know what entry level is for you. If you can find a shop near you that sells Marin they have some decent budget full suspension bikes. Hardtail is a waste of time imo.

Hardtails are fine, a little overmemed but still just fine, especially in “super budget” (the cheapest new non-Walmart full suspension I can think of is like$800). Hardtails are great for trail riding and moving around on dirt paths. Yeah full suspension is cooler and definitely should be the choice if he plans on going to bike parks or riding rough trails, but super budget and full suspension don’t really mix too well. As a beginner, dumping a lot of money into a new hobby is pretty stupid. A MTB beginner woulnt be riding difficult /dangerous trails anyways. So why not?

The NPC answer would be "buy a used bike instead" but theres a lot of shit bikes on the used market and inexperienced beginners aren't capeable of judging whats trash and whats not.

With a walmart bike you have at least warranity and the weight isn't that critical as a beginner.

if you can afford a $550 bike, get the Talon 29 3. It's got all the basic features to learn how to ride, and the rims are tubeless ready. Then if you get really into mtb you can upgrade.

If that's too expensive, you gotta go used. Expect to pick up a bike for $100 and put about $200 into it to get it running correctly. If you got a bike coop or bike kitchen nearby you can do some work yourself and save some money.

You're fucking stupid. If you were riding anywhere near a competent level on those trails you would taco your wheel in minutes. I only weigh 135 and and I've destroyed every Wal-Mart bike I've ever had in a disappointing amount of time. I built a decent cyclocross bike with a new Albion frame and a used groupset and got it done for just over 400$. I've been riding it for years and I've only had to replace the bottom bracket, chain, sprockets, and brakes pads despite the fact I beat the absolute fuck out of that bike. I even went dirt jumping on it a couple times for shits

I'd go for the 29 because it's a 29, but I think it's worth it.
The frame is the same so if you really need it you can get 27+ wheels and slap them in, but for city riding, go for skinnier wheels, and 2.3s (I assume) already offer good off road grip.

The fork is already worth $200 more than the Recon and it promises more adjustability, the groupset is definitely worth it, it's probably the biggest upgrade from the rest, and the brakes, meh, you're going from a 1pot to another 1pot.
