main problem is that its pretty much a 90s mtb bso in disguise
the jumps between the ratios of the rear free wheel will most likely be large enough that you'll never be in quite the right gear
.eg MF-TZ21 - 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 28
also the brakes will not be very good

If you really want to ride on stretches of gravel (why anyone would do this is beyond me) you probably want to get a carbon fiber fork or a steel bike with steel fork.

Point being retardo if he actually wants to spend hours on gravel he is best off with steel.

If he wants fat tires, a headstack, relaxed positioning, low gears then that is fine.

He'll be a killa bee just buzzing along on gravel with an aluminum fork...which is totally fine for the road, rough roads, dirt etc

wear components like tires don't last very long, they don't come properly adjusted when bought new, and they don't hold their adjustment when you get them tuned up.

if you are new to cycling and just want to try it out, or you only need a bike that will last 50 miles (that's about as long as these bikes will run for), they can be a good option.

Also called cup-and-cone bearings. Angular contact bearings don't require as tight manufacturing tolerances as deep groove ball bearings because of their adjustable nature. On cheap bikes you'll find these often left without sufficient lubrication and unnecessarily tight. They'll work fine if you pack them with lithium grease (third of the free volume should be grease for best performance) and adjust them properly. Do this for the hubs and headset (the bottom bracket is usually a cartridge system).

If the rear derailleur just reads SHIMANO you know it's going to be bad. Shimano makes a wide range of equipment and the ones they don't specify with a model name are the bottom-bin variants. It's usually stuff with outdated standards too like thread-on freewheels (which are dogshit compared to freehubs)

This usually means the bike is a 'one-size-fits-all' type of deal. A threadless fork system would be cheaper to produce if the bike featured multiple sizes and would outperform the antiquated threaded fork-quill stem-combo in almost any aspect.

It's usually called 'high tensile steel' or 'lightweight alloy' but almost always shit. It's plain gauge and thick as it's easier to weld making a sad, heavy frame.

The problem isn't the cheap solid heavy frame. the problem is that someone from walmart put it together. also you will notice that walmart bikes come in 1 size while if you go someplace that has cheap bikes like CityGrounds or BikesDirect they have 5-6 sizes from xs-xxl (49cm-61cm).

One-size bikes are made for people 5'9 or so. So if you are Joe/Jane average that is 5'9 and has 30 inch inseam the bike will kind of fit you.

The truth is that for bikes under 500 the best options are either to get it used on craigslist or buy it on citygrounds or bikesdirect or raleigh or diamondback who have perfected the direct-to-consumer 80% assembled model.

Thread on freewheel is basically a cantilever whereas a freehub is supported on both sides by the axle. A thread-on freewheel thus needs more material to resist the tilting moment created by the chain running on the cogs, especially the smallest rings which are the furthest from the support. This means the space for the ratchet mechanism and rolling elements are reduced whereas in a freehub theres larger ratchet elements and less axial force subjected to the hub-side bearing.

the problem with KENT bikes isn't the frame, it's the cheap gearing. Kent also used to (aka 20+ years ago) make the bikes that got branded by Western Auto and Sears that people loved in the 60s/70s/80s.

They also opened a bike factory in South Carolina.

Kent bikes are great for kids who need a 24" wheelsize- sturdy frame and a cheap gruppo that they'll grow out of before you have to replace.

also with the majority of freewheels all the gears a permanently joined together into a cluster
so when one cog wears out the rest of the hub is useless

where as most free hubs have interchangeable cogs that form the cassette
so you only have to replace the worn cog
and you can select your own custom ratios much more easily

I've never noticed this to be an issue
however i have seen plenty of freewheel hubs that have bent axles or quick release pins

honestly anon, you’re better off spending $300-400 on a used, older trek. i mean, shit, it’s not new, but it’s a reliable frame with a good fork and wheels. plus, bikes are an investment, and walmart bikes typically have shoddy welds and generally bad construction, so you wouldn’t wanna spend $140 on something that will last 6 months.
