I'm looking to buy a bike to replace my car with. The car is breaking down, falling apart, and just generally dying as a result of being 30 years old. I only ever use the car to go to work and go to the store, and both are 1 to 1.5 miles from my apartment, so frankly I should be less of a fatass and get a bike to ride anyways. I could just buy another car, but why spend more money to continue to be fat when I could spend less money and improve myself as a person.

I'm 6'0, currently 210 lbs (although last time I rode a bike to/from work I lost like 40 pounds, and I'd love to do that again), and I expect to ride this bike 3 to 5 miles a day for the foreseeable future. I'd like to spend as little as possible, and my only requirements are that it can go fast, doesn't break, and is at least somewhat comfortable. Snow traction wouldn't be bad, either, as I live in the midwest and winter is coming.

What should I be looking for, here? I don't want to just go to walmart and buy the first bike I see, but this is entirely alien territory for me.

Studded tyres. Studded tyres make a tremendous difference when the roads begin to ice over.

But really, with the short distances you ride, pretty much anything will do. A 90's rigid mtb, for instance. Not getting a BSO that's made of spaghetti straws and butter is probably the most significant thing.

Ouff. No, I wouldn't recomend that thing. And I'm not sure how much tyre clearance you would have for studded tyres.

I'd look at something like this http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/uno.htm for instance. Although brakes still look very much on the cheap side there.

Also seriously consider the second hand market.

Yeah, I know. It's difficult when you're a noob. I've been there. But I've never not owned a bike, as far as I can remember, so I've at least always had some reference point.
It takes some googling, looking at bikes at local bike shops and talking to the sales people, lurking /n/ and you local craigslist, and riding bikes to start developing a knowledge base and feel for it.

The way it usually works around here is you give us your local craigslist, heigh and inseam, and roughly what you might be looking for, and if you're lucky some bored anon might pick out a few sample of bikes that they think you might like.

Not entirely sure about my inseam, I googled it and the method google said to use put me at about 29" inseam (stand against wall with balls of heel at shoulder width, measure crotch to floor), and I'm approximately 6'0 for height.

I did find this lovely bike, pic related. I get the distinct feeling this is not the sort of thing I should be looking for. Just looking at that frame makes me worried...

The Diamondback looks like a good option. The way the rack is mounted looks terrible, but that's inconsequential.

The Fuji does indeed look lovely, and is also something you might typically consider an option, but again clearance for winter tyres is a concern, and it looks to be too small for you anyway.

Oh, also, if you want to ride in the snow, mudguards/fenders are a really, really nice thing to have.

Is there anything in particular that I should look for before buying it? Obviously I should take it to a bike shop afterwards if I do buy it, both to get it tuned to my height and just to verify it's not going to fall apart immediately, but before making the transaction are there any common red flags to be aware of when buying used bikes?

Rule of thumb is when you're standing over the frame there shoul be maybe an inch of space between your crotch and the top tube. Saddle height should be so that when you're seated, ball of the foot on the pedal, and leg extended with the pedal at the lowest point there should be just a slight bend to the knee.

Other than that, try it out, make sure shifting works satisfactorily for all gears and brakes are working well.

Looks to be a Fuji Sportif 1.1, probably about 5 years old. Reviews seemed to indicate it's a great bike, and the size seems to match myself, but the seller didn't list a price. I asked him what price he was looking for, but in case he came back with telling me to offer a price I did some more research. Would an initial offer of $200 for a used bike that was $1100 new five years ago be a good starting spot? I don't want to go much past $300 total, but I also don't to just insult the man.

Awesome, I'll look into those. Also, the Fuji Sportif owner got back to me and said he wanted $400, so that one's out of the budget anyways, even if it were in good condition.

I'll probably try the Schwinn first, especially if you're saying it'll be a bit more relaxed than the Cannondale; the price is a lot tastier too. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of space, I live in a small apartment, and I can store one bike here but not really two, let alone a workstand. Have to be a bit picky about what I can fit in here.

I noticed that too, but then I noticed the shark toothing looked the wrong way around, like if the chainring had bin flipped around after having worn out. I didn't know what to make of that so I didn't say anything.

26" mtb frame sizing is different

20" is more like a large mtb
more or less equivelant to a 58cm road bike.

I ended up getting the Diamondback I put in the first post; of the various postings, he's actually the only one to even respond, but I'm pretty happy with it as is. Not depicted are the two bags, the two bag racks, and the bike lock that came with it.

Took it to an LBS, their shop tech was out so they didn't try to upsell me into a tuneup, but the manager looked at it since it was a slow, rainy Sunday. He said that the tires were good, frame was good, cassette was good, that the rear wheel was slightly out of true but not enough to be a safety issue, and that the chain was worn to hell and probably the original chain from the first purchase. So, he replaced the chain, and gave the bike a clean bill of health.

Rode it around a bit, I really don't remember bikes being this fast as a kid. I know I'm not actually doing this speed, it's just perception, but it feels like it gets to 25-30 mph on flats, and that's a lot faster than I remember. Something about rear gear 4 feels wrong, though; it jumps a lot when on that gear, so I've already started shifting right past it.

Did about 2 miles total and felt like dying afterwards, so I'm going to do another 2 miles tonight and the night after that and so on until it doesn't make me feel like dying before committing to a ride to work on it, but I'll get there. I knew I was a lardass going into this, and I knew it wasn't gonna be easy, but it's worth it.

Currently riding an old hardtail CC MTB I got as a teen, but it's falling apart and honestly it's a bit on the heavy side. I'm leaning towards a plain old all-rounder cross bike with a light suspension fork. Would I be well served? Any suggestions as far as brands and models go? Budget is flexible as I will get several grand out of selling a car. I know you can get bikes at vastly different price points but I'd have to consider whether there are any gains in durability and/or weight at a higher price point.

this dude is correct. the good news is that a new cassette for a bike like yours is maybe 20-30 dollars and will last you 2 chains/4000 miles.

If you like the shifting gaps, look to see the product number of the cassette and get it on amazon or have your LBS order it.

The rule of thumb is that you change your chain every 1500 miles or when meaured to greater than .75% stretch. If you do that you should get 3 chain swaps for every rear cassette.

Generally the big front chainrings don’t wear down as aggressively as the small rear cassette, but it could be bad enough that you’d want to. Look at the teeth and compare them to a new chainring, the teeth should have flat spots, not be pointy

Fayetteville anon here, met with mtb guy today. Left without a bike. There were quite a few things that worried me about the bike, although I know some of them can be easily replaced.
-shifting was unusual and sketchy at best
-chain was rusted
-brakes not only had a ton of play, but at one point I saw metal chavings coming off at the tire where the brake meets the rim
Other than these things, it was pretty nice. Since I'm new to this, I'm not sure if this is easily fixed stuff (besides the chain, obviously), but I told him I'd "keep in contact", so it's still an option. Keeping my eyes peeled for other deals. Meeting with the guy selling that Azuki to see (just in case it's a good deal), and I found some decent stuff on fb mktplace. Will keep you all posted. Thanks for the help, lads.

if you aren't prepared to do it then save up the $500+ for an entry level decent new bike and even that will likely need adjusting.

the actual issues i'd be concerned with are really rough wheel hubs or badly out of true rims or bad drivetrain wear

the fuji will have a smoother ride
the fuji also has a subcompact, so considerably lower gearing, while the kona basically has road gearing which is not ideal for versatile meme riding
the brakes are pretty shitty, thats the big downside, you can upgrade one day though
it's also got nicer tyres

Both are good options
you should try test ride them
or just get the one you like more for arbitrary reasons

Fayetteville anon, here, with one last post.
Bought the Azuki.
After checking the bike for anything bad, it was a steal at $80! Took it to the uni bike shop, where I did my own repaire. Replaced the back tire and adjusted the brakes. Still needs replacing cables and (personal preference) drop handlebar, and with a bit of elbow grease and cosmetic stuff, it'll serve me well for years!
Thanks for the help, lads. I am quite satisfied with my purchase. Pictures soon to follow.

Get rims from other people's crashed bicycles.

See park tools brake service. Clean the rims, with alcohol, possibly with sandpaper if there's rust. Lube pivots, cables, levers. Replace dried out brake pads, or at least resurface them. Check if the cables pull freely. If not, replace the cables.

That would have gone for three times as much in my area, but it's infested with hipsters. It will never be a great bike, but it beats shit at it's price point, and it will absorb bad roads a lot better than new aluminum.

Will check that out. My uni has a self-service bike shop with the Park Tool big book of bike repair. I assume that's what you're talking about.
Fayetteville is pretty big on cycling. Lots of events year round, the biggest being the Joe Martin Stage Race, and not to mention all of the MTB trails and cyclocross/gravel stuff popping up constantly.
I wasn't looking for an outstanding bike. I have to start somewhere, might as well start somewhere decent. At least it's not a walmart bike. Besides, thus far, it's pretty nice

It's a fine bike but look out for something mid tier from the 90s with 700c wheels, butted chromoly tubing, downtube shifters, and 7 speed. Those are a lot better all round and often no more expensive.

27.5" wheels or 29" wheels (700c wheels are for road bikes)
8 speed or higher
Some people like 1x but Im old school and like the 2x setups, especially for all around use
Under 1000 USD: decent spring shocks made by RockShox or Suntour
Over 1000 USD: Gas shocks
Over 1000 USD, downhill: Dropper post
Under 1500: Front Suspension
Over 1500: Full Suspension

If you like the front shock MTB and want to upgrade the next level up is the 500-700 level which gives you a hell of a lot of bike unless you are trying to do stupid shit. The more expensive MTB you get the more specialized machine it is. Oddly enough you can get a kick ass all-rounder for 500-1000. (Fayetteville doesn't have mountains with ski lifts where people take their bikes up so there is little reason for you to buy some of those more expensive DH ones)

BD bikes are fine on the whole, though the cheap things they sell are unsurprisingly not very nice - the only drawback is that they still need to be assembled and adjusted by someone who knows what they're doing. But if you're already in a position to be able to do all of the necessary work yourself, you can probably find and fix up a nice used bike for less than buying a new one from BD... So BD makes sense primarily for people who have some knowledge of bikes, but don't have access to a good used market.

i think the spec on the poseidon x is good except the brakes are chinky and the gearing choice on the crank is extremely stupid. Both are liveable and changeable though.

That's a good question. When I saw the prices in the shop, I assumed those would match the MSRP on Cannondale's website but that doesn't seem to be the case. The cheapest bikes I could find online are ~$1,000 but they had some around $450 to $800 at the shop. Guess I'll go back and take notes this time.

The shop was nice to me, yes. The guy asked if he could help with anything and I told him I was just trying to figure what my options were so I could budget. He suggested starting around $500--$700 for the bike and not worrying about anything more expensive than that, then an extra $100--$200 for things like a helmet, pump, seat, etc.

I think buying from a helpful shop is really not a bad idea, however 2 pieces of spec on the posiedon don't have anything good under them.

A bike with a lower spec drivetrain than claris r2000 (say, the previous generation, or tourney). Or especially a bike without a carbon (or chromoly) fork, like an aluminium or 'alloy' fork, is not just a little worse in a way that's fine for the convenience, it's actually not very good any longer.

Normally you'd want to take the hit spending more at a shop rather than get a worse thing. If you work out what bikes specifically you could get there, maybe take some photos of them, we can give a hot take.

Hey /n/iggers, I have the chance to buy a Litespeed Ocoee for 500 dollars from a LBS that I know well. The thing is, I already have a great steel Trek 930 that I use for commuting. Plus the lack of braze-ons or mounts really concerns me if I were to use it for commuting. How am I going to store anything? I haven't owned or ridden a bike since I was 12, about 15 years ago. I mostly want to get out and exercise since I have a sedentary job, but eventually I'd like to try some nearby gravel trails. I don't care about going fast.

I went to my local bike shop looking for something that fits and they suggested a Cannondale Quick CX 3. I tried the bike and liked it, but I had a few concerns:

a hybrid with decent spec
boring safe option, probably what i would pick if i was a 60 year old woman. If you really get into this you'll probably regret it. However it will be comfy and competent for short relaxed rides and probably feel more natural to someone with almost no experience.

If you have a sporty bone in your body i'd get the poseidon x, it will simply be a lot more fun to ride, not because of the drop bars, but because it has a lighter rigid frame.

storage is not an issue unless you wanted to tour (which the poiseden would be better for). Both bikes have mounts for a rear rack and there are lots of frame bags that would work on both bikes.

Because there are several different systems of clipless pedals (which is what people who ride road bikes use) that aren't compatible with each other, so they just sell them like that and people simply transfer their old pedals to it. Cheaper bikes come with plastic pedals which you replace soon enough anyway.

Perfectly fine commuter, not sure where you're getting the "overequipped" bit from. If you want to carry groceries with it you're gonna need some sort of crate to put on top of that rear rack. A front rack or basket would be a good idea too.
As for the size, go for the smaller one since you can't test-ride it and if it's too big you're shit out of luck.

The frame looks slim but it's aluminium. The rack is a Racktime model, sub brand of Tubus. Regardless of what bike I'm gonna buy I would've bought a Racktime rack anyway because it has its own snapping system where you can just pop baskets and stuff onto it and even bolt snappers onto your own items. You can also hang stuff from the sides. That the rack is already included is just a nice bonus. I consider front racks a fashion trend and rather overrated.

I was asking whether I might be overequipped in that the commute is really short (3-4 miles a day) and majority cobblestone of varying bumpiness, and I might be served better by a comfier bike. But I also want something that's effortless and light compared to my current lumbering rusty 18 y/o hybrid.

Not when it comes to actually hauling cargo. Riding on a fully loaded rear rack with nothing in front can get pretty damn twitchy.
And it comes with 40mm wide tires, plenty wide enough for any shit roads. It's too bad the site doesn't list the maximum tire clearance though, but if it comes with fenders then it means there's room for bigger tires.

It a steel (1020) bike. Here's the picture from the other side.

Out of the 5 used bike I bought it's the first with "clicketing" noise ratchet style coming from the rear hub when coasting.
The hub is not loose just the noise from it. Just a re-lube and that's it ? I don't care about the noise just want to know if a new rear hub is expected.

Also tires on it are 700x38c. Trying to understand tires sizing. I want to have studded tires for winter what you recommend ?

700c is the same size as 622mm, 29" and lol 28"

38 is the width and you can go up or down on that depending on how much clearance you have. measure it. tyres do deviate from listed widths a fair bit

i'd only use studded tyres if you're going to be riding on a lot of ice otherwise they're just extremely heavy ride badly and have poor grip on other surfaces. they don't do shit for snow unless it's very hardpacked. Marathon Winters come in 700x35 that would work though.

I'd go for 32mm conti 4 seasons they have excellent grip, good strength and are quite fast, or maybe 35mm panaracer t-serv. You kind of want a racier tyre because they have the best grip but then also a tough version of it.

Thru axles on road bikes are still kinda niche, even more so on steel frames. There's a couple of Kona steel bikes that fit the criteria (Sutra LTD and Rove ST) but they're more gravel-y than road-y and I don't think they sell just the frameset.

Marin Fairfax is an acceptable cheap, short range runabout/commuter. If you're looking to go long, far or fast, you probably want something better or more focused.

If you've got a good used market, you can probably do better.

It's biggest advantage is being cheap. The mech discs are kind of annoying and shrieky. The drivetrain is about the cheapest one you should ever consider, and is annoying to index. But it will get the job done.

i wouldn't reccomend using a cruiser in atlanta unless you have access to one of the few bike paths around to the city. It's hilly and a bike like that would make you a sitting duck in car traffic, and the potholes would probably do a number on you physically as well. Also carrying that up stairs would be a bitch no? Not bad if you're dead set on a new bike. Very entry level tier components, CrMo straight fork, slack HT angle, and tourney style exposed shift cables are off putting but wide tire clearance, cross top levers, and freehub are redeeming factors. The cantilevers are both a pro and a con. Decent starting point to build up an alumemeium bike over time. It's a shame it comes with a steel fork instead of carbon on an aluminum frame.

If you don't intend to do heavy gravel or rough trails, you're much better off going with an actual touring bike or a regular roadie. Those bitz on that bike aren't really worth it either, not even at that price. And as someone who recently bought a BD bike, I highly suggest you have bottom bracket and cog/sprocket tools at the ready.

get a real, $500-800 tier road bike with at least claris gears, made out of aluminum with a carbon fiber fork. Fuji Sportif, Specialized Allez Base, etc.

You won't regret getting a fast light bike. You can always throw a spacer or two in there if you think you are too bent over. (but most entry level claris roadbikes come with a relaxed position).

Assuming you are going to Amherst or something similarly chichi so put that bike inside bro or the W. Mass winters will kill anything and you'll need a complete $150 overhaul every spring.

I would say don't get a triple but you are coming from a bike with a triple and you are describing riding conditions that would be ideal with a triple.

I am still partial to 50-34 and 11-28 in the back but to each his own with gearing.

check out the raleigh detour 2. It's 399-499 and it is essentially a beach cruiser with gears. Last years model has a spring seat and is red vroom vroom.

Also from Raleigh you could get the Carlon 8 if you want something more fashionable with a little front rack to fit a towel/6pack. it's $400.

this guy has like 10 listings that could all potentially suit you, road and rigid mtb (good for casual bikes). Go see him and if he's not a grumpy old bastard he should hook you up with something good.

For a bike flipper, his prices are good, and he doesn't appear to have serviced anything. Look for smooth bearings with no play (wheels especially) and uniform unworn teeth on the drivetrain (not sharktoothing), on the chainrings especially. When you test ride, try riding hard in several of the gears and see they don't slip.

so yeah it's a good route and get one you like and that fits you and some work needing doing isn't that bad and try not to get memed into buying one of his lower quality ones as the price difference is minimal.

Otherwise, You should:
Check the bearings in your wheel, and if they suck change them. (Google this)

Probably buy a new chain or oil it

Decide if you want to put drop bars on your bike, if so buy bars, brake levers, and shifters ($60-100) OR either keep the ones you have and not have to replace anything. Alternatively you could buy a set of touring/cruising bars and transfer all your components ($20-50)

Check that your cables all work well and aren’t rusty and nasty. If they are Buy a jag wire cable kit ($20) and replace all the cables and housings (google this)

Buy decent quality slick tires ($20-$30) if you tires are knobby/dry fitted

Stop there

It’s probably not worth it financially to do anything more than new tires/chain/bearings and a good clean up. Unless you really love the frame or you just want a cool project. If you want a road bike buy a $200 one off of Craigslist, and put the rear rack on the road bike.
