disregard the retard math, but it seems energy from the grid has a way lower footprint than converting food. What now? Does it make ebikes/scooters the enlightened choice? Obviously, electric can not substitute for cardio, but still.

If you charge an electric vehicle using grid power that isn't from an eco friendly source. You are still producing CO2.

yes, this is the main argument, EV has a smaller footprint when you look at the big picture. Obviously it depends on many factors (where you live, what is your diet etc) but for me as a cyclist it is a hard pill to swallow. I will continue to ride, but I can't be pompous about it anymore. In fact, I really hope someone chimes in with an alternative calculation that puts human powered back in the lead

Model 3 consumption is 260 Wh per mile. Humans consume 10 kcal by merely existing for six minutes, the time it will take the average person to cycle a mile. Also at 10 mph the caloric intake is only 48 kcal, not 53 kcal. And the average carbon footprint of food is 2.74g CO2 per kcal. Therefore a human cycling for one mile produces 104 grams more CO2 than they would otherwise, not 150 grams like that guy claims.

But finally and most importantly I have no clue what ass that clown pulled his US grid carbon footprint out of, because in reality it's 1559 lbs CO2 per mWh or 1.559 lbs per kWh or 180 grams per Tesla mile, not the claimed 100 grams.

And that's not taking into account
a) the 21,000,000 grams or 21 tonnes of CO2 required to produce a Tesla (or the equivalent of cycling for 200,000 miles, and that's without the Tesla even moving an inch under its own power)
b) the health benefits and reduced medical expenses as well as reduced infrastructure spendings gained from cycling

Yes, 21M CO2 amortized over 200k miles is +100g CO2 / mile

Still, we are comparing a car to a bike. I'm shocked they are even in the same ballpark. An electric bike, which google says is ~20Wh/mile, simply blows it out of the water, hence the question whether they are the morally superior choice?

Even if 100% of your electricity is generated by coal, which is NEVER even close to the case, an electric vehicle of any kind charged from that grid still has a lower operational carbon footprint than a gas or diesel vehicle.
