I used to have to drive a dump truck around the seattle area for a job right out of hs in the early 90s. With a 4 speed manual and a clutch that was like trying to push a brick into wet cement with your foot. Being stuck at a red light going uphill was exciting.

I live on the Inner Mongolian plateau, it's flatland. No hills in the city at all, the high end of the city is 100m higher than the low end and it's a gradual incline the whole way.
There are mountains 25km away to ride up but my daily rides have literally nothing to ride up higher than a 25m mound in a park.

Nope. I-5 went in long after Seattle and Capitol hill were built up. There was a proposal to route I-5 where i-405 runs now (other side of the lake) but Seattle was afraid business would move there and the city would die, leaving nothing but homeless drug addicts.

Milwaukee represent. The I-94 divide segregation is pretty real on the north side. South side - maybe less.
That said, bike culture is great in MKE and I love biking in the area.

The city is actively trying to improve bike stuff and actively trying to shoot themselves in the face with any other transportation infrastructure.

Similar experience here.

Lots of other posters mentioned hills, and it's easy enough to conquer (or avoid) them.

But in LA, there's no avoiding millions of low skill, rage level maximum, distracted drivers.
