I want to but I don't know where I would change into my work clothes. Our restroom has a couple urinals and two stalls with half-height dividers so people would see me take off my shirt if I were to change in there.
If I can solve this problem, I'll give biking to work a shot; it would be around 5 miles one way.

I ride 5 km each way. I live in Sweden.

I can't recommend what anyone should use since we all have different situations, terrain, and needs, but I'm relatively spoiled by working in a LEED certified building with showers and a locker room, an office where I can keep my bike during the day, and fairly easy terrain that I'm absolutely overgeared for with a 50/44/30x11-32

Some days I do drive, I just commute by bike because I like the fresh air sometimes.

But really, I feel your pain. The worst part about bicycle commuting here is that it's very unusual, so I try to be completely inconspicuous otherwise I'm sure to get the same questions I've answered 10,000 times before. I actually like talking about cycling, but I've found it's a waste of time answering the usual questions when many people here simply can't wrap their minds around the idea that it's possible to go places without a car - even people who have seen me do it for years...

Depending on the weather and load I'm carrying, I'll alternate between a commuter style road bike, a fatbike, and an old beach cruiser with newsboy baskets in the rear.

For cold weather, I reccomend one of those old school ski/burgler masks with a hole for the mouth to let warm air escape. This year I'm testing out some kinda eskimo slit style explorer goggles as the goggle/glasses I've used in previous years would always fog up in the first five minutes of exerting myself.

Only once or twice, and during the worst of days when i'm literally dragging my bike through snow drifts.

I agree some guy changing clothes in the bathroom wouldnt get a second look, especially if he is a 'bike guy' that everyone knows commutes. It's probably better that they see you are changing for hygene anyway so anti bike people cant say you are the stinky guy in the office.

1.5 miles in a town of about 80k. My bike is old and rough so I ride some of it on the side walk.

90s race bikes can handle *pretty* flat just fine.
but their 53/39 chainsets and 12-25 cassettes aren't close to the nice low 34-32 gear you get on a modern bike.
Aside from that they're great.

I just don't reckon a $1000 bike is ideal for commuting because you worry about it too much

Trek 520 - 2019. It has racks front and rear, pannier bags on rear for work bag and shower bag/clothes

Whatever works for you. My preference is racks and panniers and no back pack. The set-up suits well to weekend cycling because I can carry stuff in my panniers.

I prefer the ride but it makes the morning commute a lot longer than driving by car. An hour to ride, shower, change and eat breakfast before work as opposed to jumping in my car 20 mins before work and getting here on time. I do like the outdoors life so riding my bike to and from work is good, going fast is fun...

fenders #1. basket(s). flat pedals: dicking around getting into clips or straps will make you miss your traffic window. swept-back bar with ergo grips for upright traffic surveying and casual riding but also barends/aero bars/spinacci for real riding and climbs. rain shell and big brim rain hat rolled up in basket at all times.

no "work clothes" for me, I just dress casually and I use the same clothes to ride. When it rains I wear rainproof pants and coat over my clothes and leave them to dry at work.

rain proof clothes are totally worth it. I've never installed fenders on any of my bikes because of it. Of course, it doesn't snow here so I only have to deal with rain.

Rural NE USA, fairly hilly area.

Only when warm or if I’m not bar tending. Otherwise I wear some shit joggers and a spare tshirt. Ima need a bike bag, though. I need recomendations: frame bag, top tube bag, or saddle bag for one do-it-all? I’ve only got to pack spare tube, patch kit, jeans/T-shirt/flannel, and wallet/phone/keys.

My low-end trek road bike. Basically my only choice but also a really good one. It’s actually fast enough that I can crush hills and average a good speed, and my tarmac is preeeetty good quality actually so I don’t have to dodge dip duck dive dodge

Lights are a necessity, as is a patch kit pump and inner tube. If only for peace of mind.

Never when I actually end up on my bike, but sometimes the ride home is a real bitch. But even then I always feel satisfied when I make it home. Sometimes I drive in anyway, it’s not fun to bike home at 8:30pm on a dark windy night with cars flying by at 60mph. There are some gravel farm roads I could take but my bike can only fit 32mm slicks at the absolute max... might try it anyway.

Just do yourself a favour and ride with fenders on your bike.
I also like the idea to ride beater bikes so I can leave them at the train station during the day and night. I don't even lock my beater bikes at home or at work which actually saves time.

Nah, I don't like cars and I haven't had one for years. Traffic would be silly too. It takes the same time going the 22km by car or bike when you consider the city traffic.

I had a different job some years ago. It was a very short commute but it went up a ridiculous hill. My coworkers gave me the nickname "bicycle" because I rode it daily.

As a part of our buildings last renovation I set aside s spare closet for indoor bike storage so I dont even have to lock up.
