Nowhere near as based as Bombardier MultiLevel coaches. The windows on the lower level line up perfectly with high platforms so you can take a seat on the lower level, look out the window and masturbate to all the sexy feet walking on the platform.

The open gallery permits the lower seating to be at a single (door) level. The open gap is for peoples' heads when they're walking down the aisle on the lower level. The upper seating is nice because it's all single seats, so if you don't mind climbing stairs you can sit alone. Another benefit is that the conductor can check everyone's tickets at once. It's an old design, though.

I always thought that "gallery car" was a catch-all term for Chicago-style bilevels, but apparently the earliest orders didn’t have that open gallery. There weren’t cab cars for the first decade either.

They're built for space efficiency, every aesthetic detail would cut into floorspace. Also, Japan is a country with very high labor and material costs, so they're designed to be as cheap to build as possible. They've also got a climate that's really hard on structures, especially ones with exposed metal, and the concrete is probably chosen to resist that.

Low-levels are less expensive to build, and some stations get so little service that building high-levels wouldn't be economically viable. Case and point: the 3 stations in Weston, Massachusetts; Kendal Green, Hastings, and Silver Hill. Kendal Green is the main station, Hastings and Silver Hill are flag stops. Silver Hill has a small platform on only the westbound track and Hastings' platform is just Viles Street

The reality is that construction is dominated by the big 4 who don't give a fuck and prefer to build cheap and ugly and overcharge rather than making something worth looking at.

Parts of Kyoto and central Tokyo are beginning to change this paradigm now.

How long has NJT been using these anyway? I used to visit my grandmother in North Jersey every year until she died back in '08 and we'd always take the train from Metropark into NYC at least once per trip. Don't recall ever seeing a double decker on that line.

The only problem with the MultiLevel is the "luggage racks" are too small on the upper deck and nonexistent on the lower deck. People going to/from Newark Airport on the Northeast Corridor always have to clog up the aisle or a seat with their luggage which gets especially hellish around rush hour

It seems, judging where those stairs are at least, there the amount of horizontal space used for seats is too small,and they may aswell go for regular non bileveled passenger cars. Obviously the lead car would be the only one using less seat space.

GO transit has many ex control cars and that fad of locomotives having multiple Cummings engines rather than a single large one.

I used Belgian Railways for the first time about a month ago.

>trains literally arr rook same
>there are like 3 models only
