Nothing beats a properly sized lightweight road bike with properly inflated tires and a comfy seat. Hybrids/mountain/gravel bikes get shit all over in the speed department. Comfort is fine when roads are properly paved, it's like a 20lb motorcycle you run on!

If you put a set of deep section wheels and some road tires onto a gravel bike it'll handle pretty much like a road bike. And go just as fast.

I ride a road bike with pretty thin wheels and when I encounter grass or gravel, I generally dont have an issue when it pops up by suprise. I would just have multiple dedicated bikes instead of a catchall

Road bikes don't really have problems on short gravel sections. They're no ideal but you can ride on them without much trouble. You'll want a dedicated gravel bike if you intend to ride a lot of gravel and enjoy it. And the sporty gravel bikes shouldn't be discounted as a do it all bikes with 2 wheelsets. The only difference may be more tire clearance to some road bikes.

My Poseidon Triton is 23.5 lbs, a Specialized allez is 23 lbs, the Fuji Sportif 105 is 23.25 lbs.

These are for a 61cm bike. My Poseidon was weighed on one of those meathook scales with cages and (empty) bottles.

This is pretty much true. I have a fairly aggressive frame made out of aluminium with a CF fork that has a nice little 1inch fredstack and a 170mm seat. Shit is comfy and fast but really more than anything I'd describe it as effortless. You have such wide gearing that the 50-34 and 11-28 in the back just eats anything of significance so you just spin up nasty little hills.

Are you looking at base models with lead weights installed? A 56 cm Allez Sprint Comp weighs just over 18 lbs. My 23.5” 1976 Raleigh Competition weighed 23 lbs from the factory. A 20 lb bike by today’s standards is heavy.

I just weighed my 61 cm Centurion Elite RS with Shimano 600 groupset and some heavy as piss Mavic CXP11 wheels, and it came out right over 23 lbs. What's the point of using aluminum for a frame if it can't even be lighter than a 33 year old steel bike?

And sure, you can get used vintage stuff that's just as good as new modern stuff, but then you have to deal with all the little annoyances that come with buying second hand, like hidden rust or cracks, asshole sellers, no warranty, stripped bolts, etc. Which is something I personally don't mind, but I can understand others would prefer to just pay a little more and be done with it, even if it's pricier and heavier.

Modern aluminum is built for a 300 lb total weight, modern steel was built for a 200 lb total weight.

It should be noted I'm weighing a 61cm frame and I have big pin flat pedals attached to the poseidon.

a 700 USD allez base is rated for 275, I am being a bit generous by 25 lbs.

Also it is worth noting that the real failure point on a road bike are the wheels. Since the Allez has (as of 2019 at least) asymetrically laced rear wheel I doubt it's claim to be able to hold 275 but generally if they make that claim they can hold to it plus about 50 lbs.

yes. Without getting into too much nerdery, they put an unequal amount of force on the wheel which leads to the wheel getting out of true for anyone over about 200 lbs or who puts big watts to the crank.

Luckily the solution is a less than 100 USD fix of just having them relaced into a triple cross.

The Allez comes with 32 spoke in the back too so you get a wheel that can be shored up nicely.

The Poseidon Triton also has this problem.

have you looked properly at what is readily available? most bikes, even the expensive ones from real brands like trek and canyon weigh well over 7 kg even in manlet sizes. you have to get some crazy aftermarket wheels with 19 mm tubulars, cut off the drops, remove the handlebar tape, get carbon saddles etc to build a hill climb type bike.
