Would connect Atlanta to Charlotte NC with times from anywhere from 5 hours to just over 2 depending on route and whether they go with diesels or electrics. Dunno if they'll actually go through with it since it's been talked about since the early 2010's.

Anyways, Southeast US Rail thread I guess.

Atlanta loves rail, they’re always doing MARTA expansions and they recently did a study about a line to Chattanooga.

I think this line has a good chance because it goes through Athens and Greenville.

The line from Atlanta to Chattanooga has been talked about for literally 2 decades now. I went to GDOT's last community sessions about it a couple of years ago; the overwhelming feeling I walked away with was that no one important was taking the project seriously and the people involved in it seemed uninterested as a result.

Also, the best line of the ones in the OP is the green one and it has that stupid kink in it around Greenville. Another idea that's not going to happen.

I wish Delta would build HSR as feeder routes for ATL. They run too many 30 minute feeder flights from southeastern cities.

Ideally that's how it should work, but remember that since the government and ultimately politicians are in charge, they'll all be clamoring to stick their fingers in the pie and if this ever happens, it'll be gerrymandered to hell and back at the expense of practicality

Hahaha Atlanta might actually be one of the best places in the world to start a HSR route. It should also connect to Nashville and Birmingham. And from Charlotte, to Raleigh then DC.

Upgrading a freight line should be out of the question in any HSR discussion. It essentially becomes a handout to the freight railroad, who gets all the benefits while the passenger side gets all the drawbacks of sharing a line with freight.

Nationalize the entire US system. Have the government own all of the tracks in the country. Then lease out services to freight carriers when they use a line. This would solve so many of the current transit problems in the US.

Class 1 freight companies already hate caring for the up keep of their lines, they'd be happy to hand over up keep to the government. But the freight companies would obviously get to keep and own their rail yards.

The whole thing would basically function as the current interstate road system does. And politically that's how you could market the bill as; "The Railroad Interstate Freedom Act" of some dumb shit like that.

Actually it was a freight company who started our first private high-speed passenger rail company (brightline).
They just had to convince Republicans to stop blocking their business. Eventually Rick Scott agreed because he was invested in the freight company.
