Taking the subway in my city is cheap, pretty nice and genuinely faster than going by car in 90% of cases, but only because it rides on remainders of communist efficiency. Politicians nowadays are all "stop using cars, public transport is better!", but nobody wants to invest into infrastructure to do that. I was in NYC for work and not only their subway has a ridiculous layout (which is at least justified because lol free market competition solves everything), it's also slow, utterly confusing to navigate, and has both human and general filth everywhere.

It usually is, at least in central/northern europe. It's really only german public transport that's a tremendous clusterfuck (Die Bahn specifically), and Berlin (BVG) is the nations problem child. They're notorious for being out of service at the slightest sign of rain/wind/snow.

In contrast, I live in a rural region and have several bus stops within a walking distance of 2-10 minutes. Buses drive every 15 or 30 minutes, depending on the line.
There's trains running every 20 minutes, though it's planned to raise that to 15 minutes starting in December.
Delays do happen, but are fairly rare or not that noticeable (less than 2 minutes).

I use public transportation to commute to work daily and it works pretty well. Then again, I'm not living in a shithole country like OP.

All forms of transport have their time and place. If you need to get around a crowded urban area with overpriced parking then driving is a dumb idea. If you need to get around the suburbs or between two distant places without reliable mass transit connections then driving is the better option.
