I know of one Mall REIT that changed its business model and is doing a downtown shopping hub in Philadelphia, that project's doing well but its other mall properties around eastern America need serious redevelopment.

Jackson Square in New Orleans is pretty nice, and most other American cities have some other token remnant of prewar urbanism at their core.
The problem is that whenever they're not energized by some event that gets normal people out there celebrating, the space is basically owned entirely by homeless people and drug users.

That's exactly what they do with these pedestrian plazas in Europe. There is some kind of event most of the time. Weekly markets, Christmas market, renaissance fair, music festival, etc.

Our city uses it pretty agressivly. You have a farmers market once a week. In summer, you also have a flea market, in winter you have your christmas market. There are at least 2 concerts a year not counting the annual city festival and carnival is pretty busy as well. Then you have the Schützenfest and two kermesses and there might be some other stuff going on as well.

Basically, you can expect it to be busy quite often and I feel this is the best way to use them. After all, you already have this huge empty plaza without cars, might as well use it.

we have the modern version of them here in the suburbs and surrounded by giant parking lots. most places were built in streets where a main street is the center of town and is usually walkable. courtyards make more sense though.

My town uses our square (and also the fairgrounds just outside of town) pretty often, but mostly only from May to October when the weather is still decent. We have a light show in late December but that's pretty much it. Other towns nearby do too. Maybe it's just a big city problem.

Only fake ones in my area, outdoor mall things that are built to vaguely resemble some kind of historic town center thing but are really just another form of hyper-commercial retail space. Like some others have said in the thread, though, several neighborhoods near me have events where they shut down streets for things like farmer's markets, craft fairs, etc.

Disney Springs is one of the better American examples I can come with, though the space is entirely entertainment/shopping focused. You are able to entirely walk from a neighboring resort to the Springs, while it's fed from the outside by cars, buses, and I believe a small ferry service running from the other nearby resorts. I'm surprised they haven't tried putting in a Buena Vista-style streetcar system yet, but it's probably to damn crowded to try it.

Again, Walt Disney was a total train autist and would have fit in well on this board.

The American real estate industry as a whole has made a huge shift in focusing on walkability.
This simple fact causes enormous amounts of cager butthurt as evidenced ITT.
One trend that’s been getting popular the last few years is to take shopping malls (which are always dying) and repurpose them to something mixed-use, to try and make it more walkable.

There are pedestrian malls, like what you'd find on State Street in Madison, WI or Church Street in Burlington, VT.
Some places in America, like Fells Point in Baltimore, are also testing out converting certain streets to more pedestrain only areas to great success (but limited by time)

This is mostly correct, except most storefronts are rather overpriced cafés, souvenirs and postcards stores, and shitty quick fashion clothe stores.
In other words, they're places for tourists, not for the locals.
