The only issue I see, and most people see it as a positive is the 1x drivetrain. People love it for simplicity and ease of turning that crank but because you don't have a big and small ring it makes it a trail and mountain only girl- you'll be quite frustrated trying to commute somewhere on it or taking it directly from your garage to the trailhead.

eh that is pretty standard. I weighed a Fuji Sportif 105 with starter plastic pedals and no cages and it weighed in at 23.25 lbs for a 61cm which is a Fuji XXL.

It can't be the gruppo, I suspect $1000 roadbikes are overbuilt a bit on purpose so they can take either bigger riders or cargo

sounds good but you might have limited recourse if something goes wrong if you buy it on aliexpress or something. take good evidence and open a dispute within the given time frame. check the type of bottom bracket like the other anon said, some bottom brackets could potentially have issues with creaking and premature wear.

aventon mataro for $499 (reduced from $589.99)
make something similar but with a 105 groupset for ~$1000. it'll be on the slightly heavier side but the aggressive geometry and the aero focus will be pretty unique at that price point.

what i want is for someone to make an "aero race" bike with an aluminium frame instead of carbon. this aero road bike concept is relatively new and they tend to be full carbon only while cheaper aluminium frame bikes tend to have more of an endurance geometry.

on a moped people get pulled over where i live. ebikes are a newer phenomenon so idk how much of an issue it is but they have similar restrictions like with mopeds. people hate cyclists that misbehave so if you're blatantly riding at high speeds or accelerating fast in traffic you're begging to get caught eventually.

Threat these bike as an primary/infant technology and there are as such in variations of connectors and motherboard you will get fucked somewhere. Unless you can gey cheap parts or being really clever.

I somewhat have around 5 in the last three years. Ive bought one and a friend who is a metal buyer/seller brought me 3 or 4. The one I bought circuitry was shot by being stored in high humidity garage and the others has one battery salvageable and one motherboard that was in good conditions.

Recent one are better but anything under 2016 expect that it was badly stored, badly recharged (many weeks or months whitout being charged and deeply discharged)

You are better buying a kit for a suitable bike or buying new. Or be prepared to a money pit or not working efficently.

Ebikes under 100$ is available in my area and not selling for a few months and with little few views.

Are Bianchi city bikes any good? There's this Primavera for sale near me for like USD40. It's 1x8 and has V-Brakes. Maybe I'll slap some cantis, drop bars, and a 2x Crankset on it? I intend to take it touring.

It should be enough for light trekking, but heavy duty fully loaded touring is specific enough to call for it's own bike. a 14 kg touring bike isn't comparable to a 14 kg commuter in loaded durability.

$3k is imo where "decent" starts for a fulsus bike in the US, and you still wind up with a lot of glaring weaknesses with wheels and brakes. I have a $5k Cannondale Scalpel SI SE (that I only paid $2k for thankfully) and am dropping $700 to put non-shitty brakes on. Sometime next year it gets new wheels and then an XTR drivetrain and maybe a Hope crank to fully de-SRAM it. MTBing is expensive.

The problem is that modern trail design has made it so that anything above a beginner level trail is going to be best done on that decent bike. Another reason why gravel riding has taken off.

So there's a local manufacturer that's offering a chromoly touring bike for $500. It's equipped with Tiagra 3x and mech discs, but it weighs 15.5 kgs. The closest touring bike I can get new here with drop bar would be Marin Four Corners, but it's $175 more expensive here. Should I go for it? The store is even offering free lifetime service.
Alternatively I could go for Triban 500 SE (Microshift version) and slap mudguards and rear rack for the same price but realistically what's the load limit? Planning for commuter/ grocer run and weekend long distance rides. Also apparently it can't fit 28 mm tires which would be unfortunate because the roads are bad, too much construction projects and low quality asphalt against overloaded trucks.

then it sounds like you want a regular road bike with bosses for mudguards and possibly a rear rack maybe. You don't need a Marin 4 corners touring bike.

I'd probably get the Triban 500. It weighs 10.08 kg and has a carbon fork. it has a nice aggressive edurance road bike geo with a spacer stack to make it more comfy. If you don't like Microshift the sora model is only a hundred or so more.

those pedals and new brake levers are like $50 each and things which massive improve old bikes. So then you've got $100 for some new wheels and tyres as well, also a big thing. And then it's just a $100 OTS in great condition, not a bad buy. And all the bearings and cables are done. And the paint is perfect and looks fantastic. And nitto parts.

And he should of course turn up with cash and haggle in person.

It's not the kind of thing you'd buy if you had fixing bikes as a hobby but it's a great buy for a new rider imo.

The Miele and the Pinarello would both be faster more competent road bikes though, yes. But which one is nicer to ride 5km on at a clip? You'd have to try them. Sometimes OTS can be quite lovely to ride.

None of the old standards are issues on a bike which has been completely restored because he won't have to touch anything on it for a long time.
As is, that bike likely rides very nicely and will be very reliable. That's practicality. And he said he lives somewhere flat so braking performance and wide gearing aren't as much issues.

It's not merely in 'working condition'. It's in like-new condition. The practical value of your average $100 OTS, infact of 99% of used bikes, is significantly lower because they'll all need work done and won't function as well.

I also think it looks really nice. That can't be undervalued on a bicycle. If you have a bicycle that you -just like- then you'll use it more and enjoy it more. It's personal of course.

I'm curious if the OP is prepared to go ride it and tell us what he thinks because that's really what matters. Take $250 cash with him and see where it goes.

Some makers have shorter and some have longer TT than the size implies. After you know the range of sizes you would need, look up any that you get interested in within that range. The danger of a recumbent is the inability to bail, which is important for certain types of mountain biking and BMX. If you're looking to just use it off-road and not as a dirty roller coaster, then they can be fine as far as most safety goes. I ended up buying the Viscount. apparently the boomer who built the thing knew somebody who had a large collection of Viscount frames (because he worked for them or something) so it was totally rust-free and unridden. I did end up paying full price for two reasons (1) he threw in some extra pedals and (2) through a series of circumstances I'm not the one actually paying for it. It was a blast to ride and should be a good commuter and a fun bike.

Diamondback is a junk brand. The salsa is ok, but that Contend AR is a winner especially if you can afford the $1500 version. So I just moved to Chicago and I want to get a bike for getting around. With the lack of hills I'm thinking about a single speed. Is this a terrible idea? the SXL expressway is $199 not $99 as far as i can tell? i'm a cheapskate so i know how it feels but i would strongly recommend the aventon mataro for $499 (to turn it into a proper single speed you need a rear brake and ideally drop bar brake levers such as tektro rl340). it's a vehicle after all and you'll be comfier and faster with the carbon fork blades, more aggressive geometry, lighter weight, and better aerodynamics. with a nicer bike you won't feel as reluctant to do maintenance on it and spend money on tools, accessories, and replacement parts like a new chain, new brake cables, new bar tape/grips, new tires, new freewheel, new chainring, new crankset, new wheels etc.

In Chicago you're going to have massive wind. I would strongly suggest getting a bike with drop bars and road brake levers (not the shitty cx/interupter levers you see on cheap fixie bikes)
The weather is the second issue. A lot of these cheap bikes will have narrow tires and no room for fenders. For that kind of city riding my ideal would be 35mm tires and fenders.
I'm not sure what brands offer something like this. Bikes direct has some, Marin nicasio has it. Mercier Kilo WT has it. Aventon kijote.
You could look for a used cx bike, maybe

In my experience all SPD pedals are created equally in terms of reliability. The model you posted sheds debris well and is easily serviced, not that you'll have to more than once a year, if that. Replacement bearings are cheap and easy to come by. I've been using SPDs on my road, gravel/commuter, and mtb for years and have had no problems once they were tensioned properly. There are one sided pedals that have a flat body on the other side (pic related) that you may want to consider if you think you will ever want to ride with flat shoes, but swapping pedals is piss easy anyway.

It's probably fine but I bet you can talk him down a bit. Does anyone know what these bar ends are? Reverse search just brings up forum threads talking about innerbarends. At first glance they look like they're vintage, but you can tell their more recent because of the length (shorter) and girth (fatter) compared to something like the control tech stix or the equivalent specialized bar ends of the era.

What's a good all-road/gravel bike for around $1500 USD? Been loving every minute of using it. I don't race, I just like riding it from point A to point B, exploring new places, riding to work, "long distance" rides (so far longest is about 60 KM).

What would I gain if I sold it to buy a new 2000 euro bike and would that be a good idea? Would it make a big difference for someone like me?

a road bike would be a significant enough change if you're interested in that. a road bike can still cope with mild gravel roads/trails. or put continental gp 5000 tires on your gravel bike, they come in widths in up to 32mm. if your stock tires are wider, your rims are probably still narrow enough to be able to put 32mm tires on them.

This bike, if I could get it for like $60 bucks would it be worth it? I've got this intuition that its a good frame, good wheels. And I dig the downtube shifters. Its a bit rusty on some parts, and its also got some odd-ball parts like the wheels and stem.

actually no. It has the wrong sized wheels. 27" is useless if you wanted to tour on it as the size is obsolete and you'd never find a replacement anywhere if you blow a sidewall. A cassette hub with ramped hyperglide cogs would also be a big upgrade.

the fork ends are badly damaged. It looks like something has smashed the frame while the fork is resting on the ground and badly deformed them. Or some absolute moron has tried to ghetto lawyer lips. Either way it's also likely out of alignment. I would probably avoid it for that reason.

However that damage could very likely be a complete non-issue and you could also possibly just bend both back.

If you're ready to spend $500+ replacing nearly everything on a bike that was left out in the rain, including the fork, go for it. Keep in mind the seatpost and bottom bracket might be rusted to the frame.
Sad to say, but it's not going to be easy to get that bike into ideal operating condition, at which point you could just buy a better modern bike for a bit more. That bike is a job for a guy with a garage full of parts or a co-op membership

2007 I think (the other one is 1999), with a mix of Tiagra and 105.
I don't live in a ghetto, and have left my alloy mtb outside a few times just fine, but as much as I prefer the way it looks it is still a factor to take into account. If you tell me there should be a significant upgrade in parts quality and durability I'll take this. My previous two commuters were shitty steel money pits.

I think the wheel itself is the same, he just swapped the tire for the cheapest Michelin, maybe he's keeping the old ones which is what I'd do if I sold my bike. I had a couple of pars of those, they taught me the value of investing in good tires or having to spend more money later in inner tubes and patches and eventually new tires after they peel off not to mention the pain in the ass. Michelin Lithion I suspect, garbage. The rear is a Vittoria Zaffiro which is even cheaper so it probably is garbage as well even if it is new. Again I don't mind investing in tires.

i disagree with the other anon, but it depends on what you mean by inexpensive, generally you won't get anything good if you're not willing to pay, everything costs money like if you need a new chain, freewheel cog and chain ring because the previous owner didn't replace the chain soon enough, and new tires so that they won't feel horrible and get punctures too often

Not too far, packing and gear isn’t too much of a concern, not taking camping equipment or anything, sticking to paved bike routes and roads, I guess the paths can get rough, but I have actual mountain bikes for actual trails, I’m not looking for a hybrid bike

I really want the Jamis since there's one locally in my size on clearance at $740 since it's outgoing model and its geo looks perfect. I spent a few months over a /o/ fawning over cars after I got my first car. But now I'm longing to the days when I used to enjoy the journey when walking or cycling to places. I am not buying new, there's a few Dahon and Citizen bikes within my $200 budget.

I've been mostly looking at getting a citizen miami or tokyo bike. But also at a 200$ Dahon SUV D6. There are no reviews on the suv D6 out there and it's the entry level model so I'm not sure... I'm 5'6 140lbs so I don't think fitting on one would be an issue. The reason I'm looking at folding bikes is so I can always have it in my car and just go cycling on a moments notice around wherever the fuck I drive to. Or when I get to work an hour early and just bike around for fun. Thoughts?

Yeah, with my old bike I could fit the entire bike in my hatchback without taking off the tires, it had quick release wheels too. Another issue that leads me to folding bike is that I live in a tiny apartment with no space anywhere, that's actually why I sold my old cannondale RIP.

The savings could come in handy but the paint scheme isn't as nice on the 105 bikes :| I'll need to extensively eyeball their collection. Being a tour guide co, they have a huge selection but none of their offers are online so in person only. The only thing though is race bikes don't make good delivery bike builds. We'll see

cycling has a shitload of autism associated with it and a lot of gotchas like if you buy a used bike there can be a lot of things wrong on it and parts that you might have to replace before you're good to go. if the tires are worn even a little bit they could have reduced performance and get flats too easily. on the other hand if you consider spending a bit more on a new bike you should do a lot of research so that you get the right type of bike for your needs (road vs offroad, luggage capacity etc) and the correct bike fit (but if you use a size guide based on your height you should get reasonable close). don't bother with the used bike ads that don't even bother to list the frame size because the owner is probably a buffoon who doesn't know anything about bikes or bike maintenance. also keep in mind that you'll need to buy thinks like a floor pump and various tools and lights and reflectors if you plan on riding in the dark. some bikes may come with pedals that you need special cycling shoes for or they might now have pedals at all so you might need to buy pedals and a pedal wrench and the old pedals might be stuck and be a bitch to remove. with older bikes the quill stem and the seatpost might be completely stuck so check that before you buy it. and normies might have crashed the bike and bent the frame out of alignment or cracked a carbon fiber part or rusted a steel frame.

I know I've been putting off going out and spending $150 for a restored Schwinn World Tour or Tallboi Japanese steelie because I don't want to hear all the retrogrouch stories about how RAGBRAI was better in the 90s before it got big.

My bike CL is three things:

>crackheads and pickers selling Raleigh tourists with seized up hubs for $40 to put out under a tree
>bike flippers who have taken every old bike, fixed it into nice-ish condition and are selling them for $150
>delusional people who got suckered at an LBS with the wrong size or who did something stupid on their bike and are now trying to sell it for $100 under MSRP.

I'm looking to get my single speed bike with 20 inch wheels upgraded to a planetary gear hub. What should I be looking at? I feel nexus 7 or 8 is an overkill, nexus 3 feels like why even bother and they don't make nexus 5 anymore. 3 speeds would probably be just fine but 5 speed seems ideal, also price wise. If you want to do really long rides you might enjoy something with more laid-back geometry than a typical fixed gear. First thought is the All-City Nature Boy, which is disc and has track fork ends. You could also set up a Surly cross check as fixed. You'll have rim brakes and horizontal road dropouts to work with though. The steering on either will be less twitchy so you can relax and take in the views, but it won't be as fun riding through busy stuff.
Wabi Cycles also has the Thunder. It can fit 700x2.0 and is fixed specific. But according to a recent review by that Zach Gallardo guy is it fast handling like a regular fixie. Might be what you want.
The biggest thing is getting a bike with fat tires for long rides to save you ass. Now that I think about it, the Kilo WT is also good for this. The green paintjob version looks great IRL

note the WT has more aggressive geometry than the Thunder. Probably not a big deal but something to consider. Zach might be over-selling how "fast" the Thunder handling actually is

according to outdoorgearlab it's a bit heavier than you wanted at 22 lbs 7 oz in size L but keep in mind some of that weight can be attributed to the stock 38mm tires

I am looking for a bike that I am going to use strictly in the city every day for commuting (12 km total) and to get around with instead of public transport.

The problem is that most recommendations online are for the US market and I can usually not find these bikes here in Germany.

I don't have a specific price range in mind but I don't think it makes sense to get an expensive high quality bike because I wont use it enough. On the other I don't mind paying a bit more for better quality parts if that means less headaches in the long run.

What I have found is the Trek FX 1 for 400 eur and the Marin Fairfax 2 2019 for 500 eur.

Looking at ebay (not sure if there is a better website in Germany) is unhelpful as most posts there are either missing the model or size or if they do have it then I cannot find any review online of the bike.

the trek is pretty heavy. the marin doesn't look too bad but i think you'd enjoy a road bike more as it is faster and you get more hand positions for comfort and you can get low in the drops for cornering stability and aero. a lot of recreational cyclists don't get too excited by hybrid/urban bikes. if you can stay away from cobbles and gravel then you don't need more than 23/25/28mm width tires which have quite low rolling resistance. ideally you'd get a carbon fork (full carbon fork or carbon fork blades with alloy steerer) and it will ride super smooth on the road even with skinny tires.

yeah i don't like shopping for used bikes. even if you know a lot about bikes you won't save much money for the time you put in searching for a bike. craigslist is a bit better since they usually list the frame size but on normie sites it's terrible with the lack of information and with sellers trying to rip you off.

If you mean this one https://www.marinbikes.com/de/bikes/20-gestalt then the price is 900 eur vs the 500 of the fairfax. The gestalt 2019 version is 700 eur.

Thanks for the links. For the Endurance AL 6.0 it says that no pedals are included. Is that correct? What kind of pedals do I need? Do I have to be careful with compatibility? I want to wear my normal shoes.
