IRT was the first "system" and when the networks were consolidated they received the first set of designations which were numbers. When they ran out of numbers they were getting to IND and BMT lines and they gave those letters. Why numbers seemed more "real" then letters probably had to do with the street naming conventions where numbered streets tended to be the older and more established streets and letters were for the flyover areas like bumfuck outer brooklyn or the far east village

because today's NYC subway was originally three separate companies and one of them, the IRT, used numbers to name their lines/routes.

I could go look in NYC Transit books but why were the letters were doubled up at one point, like “NN”? Was it local and express? A lot of the routes were named too, like “Sea Beach” or “Culver Line”. You can always tell only time New Yorkers because they use those names, or say they’re taking the IRT or whatever even though the lines merged in 1940.

What do New Yorkers think about the Lower East Side?

I'm fucking amazed this is all public housing projects. It's some of the best (convenient) location in New York, right there between the financial district and all the trendy neighborhoods in Brooklyn.
Maybe it's just me because I'm an outsider. But in principle this should be some of the most desirable real estate, but they've relegated it all to public housing projects
