The A330neo hasn't sold that well either. That's more because if the 787. The 777X is more because a lot of what it is designed to replace isn't end of life yet.

First gen 777s are 25 years old now. There are a whole bunch that need to be replaced soon. There are also upcoming A380 and B747-400 (yes, BA, LH, and KL are still flying them) retirements.

Basically only the ME3 and especially Emirates are still interested in large planes. This week their CEO was still bitching about the A380's death. Aside from them large planes are dead and buried.

The A330 was a dirt cheap 737MAX-like upgrade meant to sap potential 777X sales, not get large sales itself. It's been working very well thus far.

ITYF it was meant to sap potential 787 sales.
It hasn't been working quite as well as expected, because Boeing responded to it with heavy discounting. But if Airbus keep working on getting the weight down it could eventually get large sales itself.

Rolls-Royce being incompetent and delivering yet another defective design (lol jet fuel particles get mixed in with bleed air and make the cabin smell like kerosene) for the 330neo (which only has one engine option) is another big factor.

Doesn't prove a thing. One article blames oil contamination, not fuel. And the other says that regulators tested for air containments, but found nothing and suggested air temperature is the cause. It also says that the number of reported incidents has sharply dropped to near zero. So who knows what was really the cause.

The center of lift moves backwards when you go supersonic. Dropping the tips of the wings like that gave the XB70 improved yaw stability in the event of engine failure, kept the center of lift in the same location relative to subsonic flight, and improved compression lift by capturing it. The Concorde mitigated the lift issue by pumping fuel to the rear tank at the end of the fuselage.

So the 777X didn't actually have a cargo door blowout. The actual failure was the keel splitting, and the cargo doors blew out from the damage.

It's questionable how big the market is in te first place. The A321XLR will only cover part of it yet what's left is not necessarily not worth developing a whole new aircraft for. A new 767 variant might be a sufficient answer. Also Boeing's priority is likely to be to fund a MAX replacement over an NMA if the MAX certification doesn't go well.
