A few states that use state symbolism without slapping the silhouette of the state on it are Kansas (a sunflower for the Sunflower State, although the yellow on black is kinda meh), Washington (Washington's profile), Alaska (Ursa Major constellation from the state flag), Pennsylvania (keystone), Utah (beehive), New Mexico (Sun of the Zia), and New Hampshire (Old Man of the Mountain) all have symbolism relevant to the state.
A REALLY interesting idea I'd like to see someone try is state route shields cut in the shape of the state, but you could argue Colorado and Wyoming already do that lol
