New York’s Third Avenue Railway System built their own streetcars during the depression by recycling old single truck cars into modern double truck ones like these. Then they started building their own cars from scratch but still recycled old hardware from scrapped cars.

Do modernizations of trains on the same network count? Because I love the Tatra T3.PLF that Prague and I think a few other eastern European cities have thought up. The T3 has a legendary reliability but at some point it didn't comply with accessibility regulations anymore so in addition to the usual seating, control and audiovisual information upgrades these units also had a low floor center section hacked into them for wheelchairs and strollers. You can see the difference between the low floor windows on either side of the center entry and the rest of the windows at the original height.

The articulated Bridge Units on the Key System were built from older, conventional streetcars.
But apparently they fucked when they built them with large, non-opening windows and no a/c.

In the 1920s, the DRG&W took boilers from old standard gauge 2-8-0s and mounted them on inside frames to make the K-37 class 3’ gauge 2-8-2s. Some of them might still be pulling tourist trains in Colorado and a lot of them are on static display.

Key System bridge units were kino AF though, and it kills me that they destroyed that transit asset rather than integrate it with the MUNI and run it in parallel with BART.

The D stock were fantastic trains in District Line service, and were pulled from tube service prematurely, less than a decade after a total rebuild, with literal decades worth of life left in them simply because TFL wanted to consolidate the surface lines around the new S stock.

I'm happy to see them living on as DMU conversions, and I'm hoping that they're reliable enough that more of the private operators decide to replace their Pacers with them.

Scrapping the key system is one of the worse crimes against public transit in the US, up there with the PE. It was beyond kino

I love the S-stock to death, but the S-stock were dealt as raw of a deal as what's about to happen to the 25 year old 01800 stock on the MBTA when they get scrapped and replaced by the new CNR trains in 2-3 years without ever even seeing a midlife refurbishment.

Not him but luckily the D78 stock has seen a midlife refurbishment from from the grey livery with half red fronts to the standard London Underground livery.

I love it / love too / writing a proposal on that right now

Previous Ideas was

Old Toronto PPC / CLRV

Removal of the rear seats and insert a isuzu truck engine driving a generator where the Coupler was-

- much like the old Mack rail bus.

An alternative would be take an unpowered trailer from one of those German / Dutch streetcar lines and put a genset in it.

So a heritage streetcar museum can run street cars with out all the infrastructure of overhead power or even have no rail lines -- ie take them out on a short line rail during their down time like on a week end.

also use them as a ' last mile ' / branchline / extend street car lines. or someplace seasonal.

These EMU's are built by BN (Later Bombardier) and Holec and assembled by INKA between 194 to 2001, they gained a reputation for breaking down often
