Other main reasons are network signal coordination, junction spacing, etc.
As much as a median u-turn might increasing crossing distance for a widened median, or disrupt bike lanes in general, roundabouts in this class will have further more difficulty at accommodating pedestrians and bicycles. Bicycles might be less worse, but eventually some form of signals will be needed at crosswalks. The median u-turn itself will benefit crossings compared to normal intersections. Fewer vehicles phases, less delay to all users.
