does anyone here actually work full-time on a bicycle related job? It seems like all job offers are part-time and some of them even request voluntary work - and I live in a major European capital. Is it even possible to be a full time bike mechanic anymore?

It's the same in US. I think its just one of those things where you have to already know someone who works there. I've never seen a shop hiring full time.

I've worked in a couple bike shops and got 40+ hours during the warm months of the year, but then the hours would drop off for everyone who wasn't management role (or the owner of the shop) during the off-season. That's the main reason why I have no more interest in working in a bike shop: financially I could make a seasonal job work but it's harder to have a stable life outside of work that way.

I am in the Netherlands and going to school to become the highest certified bicycle mechanic

There are about 6 other students and 20 other students in the other class.

Plenty of full time bike mechanic jobs in the Netherlands, but I don't plan on getting a full time job.

this kind of thing is nightmare mode
so I try to check for it

Here (France) many bike shops are small and have few or no employee aside from the owner. Then you have very large shops with many employees. There's nothing in-between. The former have to cater to specific niches to be profitable (hipsters, recumbents, touring, dentists). The latter sell a lot of BSOs and pay their employees like shit but they are usually full time.

There’s just really no difference between working at QBP and any other soulless warehouse distribution job. Long hours, super low pay, ghoulish management, no real room for improvement unless you wanted to make a career out of warehouse management, it just didn’t really have anything to do with bikes besides the fact that you’re shipping them. I’m becoming more and more unsatisfied with Surly and Salsa (salsa especially) over the years, save your money and buy products from companies/brands/builders who actually need the support and care about their customers. It’s not like there aren’t choices out there.

Here in the Netherlands it's very traditional with bike shops being very general with usually 3 or 4 employees but they'll fix and sell all types. But super large shops are pushing them out of business slowly so they'll be forced into niches

I deliver food for a chain restaurant full time. Pretty much easy job as the location I work at doesn't get much business and they pay me above minimum wage. Once Winter snowfall hits most of the other couriers quit, so I make overtime and maybe have to take 30 deliveries in a week.

Its the best job I could do right now and it does give a lot of freedom but there is 0 dignity in it. I feel like everyone in the city hates messengers. At least I signed onto a good small company with a dispatcher that is actually very compotent

Full time mechanic at an independent shop here. It fucking sucks and I’m broke. We do ski shit in winter so I still get 40+hours. It sucks your love of the sport away DESU. Upside is cheap bike parts.
