I hate the bars on my bike and want to pick up some new ones, but can't decide between drops or horns. Any experience with pros and cons?

Bullhorns give you a nice hood position, perfect for city riding
Drops force you to either have an aggressive riding position, an awkward as hell "hood" position, or a gay ass twitchy tops position (like 99% of fixiefags)
So I'd say go for bullhorns. Not pursuit ones though.

Have you ever had a drop bar bike? Maybe it was an old low end one with steep ramps and rubbish levers?

I'm leaning towards bullhorns because I ride with brakes and I want a comfortable place to put them. And having them on the top of drops doesn't sound great.

ALSO the drops position doesn't have to be aggressive. You could set it up so that position is where your bullhorns would be. Then your tops and curves are super chill

Fixiefags have surely moved past needing their bars slammed as low as possible.

If you went to drops, you'd definitely want to switch to drop bar levers. A decent set is cheap.

bullhorns you can cludge basically any kind of lever on but really TT style is the best and you can also probably get away without re-cabling with bullhorns but will likely end up with not ideal length cables and potentially your cables dictating your bar height and stem.

You can't generalize about drop bars like that, they come in a million shapes and bake lever selection matters a lot

I agree with you though. I've searched far and wide for a drop bar with long ramps or whatever the top part is called. I think I found one but I haven't ordered it yet because it's $200 usd.

I'm cheap and don't want to buy tires so I do brake. And since I don't want to buy new leavers I want a bar setup that let's me keep the ones I have now. Can I put my brakes on some bullhorns backwards like psuedo tt leavers?

I have a pair of zoom 170 flats on my beater, they're comfy as hell and just the right width to fly through traffic.

If you care about weight/stiffness and all that Fred shit, the 130 flats are made of 7000 series alu

you shouldnt be skidding all the time anyway, thats for emergency stops you didnt see coming. the rest of the time you either coast down or resist the pedals. i average a skid about once a week and have raced entire technical fixed gear crits (even RHC Brooklyn) and alleycats without skidding.

Using brakes seems like it would be more efficient. I highly doubt you can slow down as quickly by resiting pedals as you could by using brakes.

i'd probably go for some cheap aero carbon drop bar from amazon or aliexpress. hambini says the handlebar is the most underdeveloped part of a road bike in terms of aero. it should be pretty sturdy and if it breaks you'll probably still have something to hold on to, not as disastrous as if the steerer tube were to snap.

I got my first fixed gear bike but I've only been riding it inside on rollers because I don't like ice and snow. How fucked am I going to be once spring comes and I try to ride it for real outside?
Does it take more or less energy to keep going on the rollers or outside? I'm spent after ~15 minutes on the rollers and my legs feel like jelly. I would imagine that the forward momentum would make it easier to bike on ground, but that's just speculation.
What are other benefits/drawbacks of rollers vs ground?

Momentum makes it easier for sure. Often times you can even raise a tooth in the rear cog when you switch from ss to fixed
You should try riding it outside though, i find ice easier to ride on fixed than free wheel, just be careful

Is sprinting/high cadence easier on the road as well? I find that I really need to focus to stay stable when going hard, otherwise I'll be weaving all over the rollers.

42cm is a pretty safe bet if you're not a very small or very big guy. simon richardson mentioned on GCN that he doesn't like bars narrower than 42cm and he's 184cm tall.

I think it's more about the width of your shoulders... I'm 196cm and like my 42cm bars.
If you want comfort, go slightly wider, if you like getting aero and responsive handling, go slightly smaller.

seriously though, I do want a somewhat aggressive bike and this turned me off bars like this, but I've heard a lot of people say it's comfy to have your hands on the flat parts. Is this position only possible when your cruising?

Yes, I ride on the tops a lot. Tops and ramps for casual riding, hoods when I want to stretch out, drops when gottagofast. This seems reasonable to me.

I've been having a weird problem the last few days though, the crankset keeps creaking. It happens mostly on the right-hand side and it's really noticeable when starting to pedal or when going uphill, applying force to the pedals. It's freaking me the fuck out. I've ruled out issues with the BB, chain and pedals so it can only be either the crank arms or the chainring...it's a Miche Primato Advanced crankset. I thought it was supposed to be good value for money.

Anyone have any ideas?

Pushing the crank arms down without the chain I THINK I could reproduce the sound, but I'm not entirely sure if it's the same sound or if it was just normal frame flexing sounds because I was really forcing it. I really hope it is the chain because I'm replacing that half link garbage anyway

You have half-link chain on, and that's your issue.

Half links are meant for light-ratio BMX drivetrains aka not your 70+ inches of gear so they tend to stretch more than the average chain under load.

Ez fix tho, junk that shit and get a real chain.

Are there any drop bars that have a long flat ramp while maintaining a flat (parallel) drop?
I'm asking here since non-fixed gear threads would count on having the hoods of the brake levers which we don't have.
I did a search and ordered some Rene Herse Maes Parallel bars, but they're not really what I was looking for. The nitto noddle bars flare out to the sides a bit and they aren't quite parallel.
Not a fan of shallow and ergo drops either. Am I out of luck?

how about profile design 1/thirtyfive? it's meant for big boi hands but if you're a handlet like me, it gives aggressive drop while maintaining parallel in both ramps and drops

Thank you for the suggestions.
The 80mm reach on the profile design 1/thirtyfive looks a little small. I do like the fact that the ramps and drops are parallel.
The noodle isn't quite parallel, but maybe I should give it a shot as the ramps look a bit longer than typical.
I'm also looking at the Velo Orange Grand Cru Course handlebars but they might be essentially the same as the Maes Parallel that I already have.

Yeah the noodle does have a slight angle and a shallow drop. You could always adjust the ramp angle from the stem but that leaves the drops angled. The 1/thirtyfive has kinda short reach since they were designed with brake his in mind. I've had both and I look for parallel ramps with aggressive drop but I'm sure someone else could chime in with other suggestions for ideas
