Personally I like duomatic very much and have one for my secondary bike. 3 speeds are also pretty good in the sense that they easily go a decade before needing new grease without robbing too many watts from you. With limited range, the key is to know the gear inch/cm you are most comfortable with and with a proper rear cogset set the ratio so that you hit that in normal conditions. Meaning on kickback that's the high gear and the middle gear on 3-speed, unless there's lot's varying terrain requiring more climbing-ability on the expense of the fast gear.
How ever, as a general rule I too wouldn't get an IGH for my daily commuter unless there were some very special circumstances. (Like, I work in a factory, but the commute is quite short, so I prefer to have a bike that isn't attractive for a price aware thief*.)
*actually I've encountered several drunken idiots who have seemed to have attempted to steal my bike specifically because they assume it's something the owner doesn't care too much about.
