Spoke lights and spoke reflectors help a lot for sideways-visibility. You don't have to worry so much about drivers coming up on you from behind if you have a visible tail light and reflectors, you have to worry about people at intersections. Something like 2% of bike accidents are from drivers rear-ending them. Fear of what you can't see is understandable but it's unlikely.
