The folded bike market is rather big since people always regret getting them
You can fit pretty much any bike on any trunk if you remove the wheels (which is dead easy)

Well if you need a bike that folds up they are obviously the best option. That's their main purpose, so sacrifices will be made elsewhere. You wouldn't buy a road bike for a downhill MTB course but that doesn't mean they don't excel at something.

Folding bikes excel at folding. You won't be racing or touring on one, but they are still bikes. Get one that fits you and has decent components and you have yourself exactly what you need.

I do not think the stability is an issue
wheel size does not have much effect on that anyway
they do however lower the gear ratio
to the extent that a larger chain ring up front is needed

Is it possible to bike in the winter?

where I live, we're averaging:
-4 to 6 degrees celsius
-humidity (today 87%)
-wind (today 21km/h)
-complete cloud cover, no sun

My regular clothes are:
winter bibs (castelli)
merino base layer
winter socks
overshoes
windproof gloves
soft-shell jacket
skull-cup

-*And I still freeze to death at the end of a 2-hour ride*-

I also work, so mostly have free time to cycle after sun-down (at 1700) where it actually becomes freezing.

How the fuck do you guys cycle in the winter?? How many more layers do I need? Am I supposed to only ride in the absolute dark?

What would be the easiest way to adapt a bike to ride in water?
I like hydrofoil but after looking around it seems rather complex to get right. I'm thinking of just attaching two flotation banana-like devices on each side and a propeller on the back, actuated by the rear tire through friction, bottle dynamo style. No idea how you would steer though.

if you go WAY too far (like say 40 or someting) maybe you'll damage the sidewalls. But I'd be more worried about the tyre rolling over during cornering if you did something stupid like that.

Bicycling.com reccommends that a 160 lb rider have 100 psi in their 25mm road tires.

I'm 270 lbs and I ride at 115 psi on 25mm (130psi max).

Having a nice squish is comfy for larger wider tires. Having your25mm road tires roll fast is the best. You should experiment with 100, 110 psi and see what is the best combo of fast and compliant.

I have also found that running 5psi less in the front helps the comfort but doesn't hurt the rolling speed.

Yesterday I decided to go pretty hard in the drops and today I have two small circular bruises on the inside of my knee and the outer thigh kind of burns/feels really warm on the same leg -- kind of like rug burn (I'm guessing my pants chaffed me since I wasn't wearing tight clothes).

hydraulic disc brakes are worth it on a gravel/mountain bike. rim brakes are fine on a road bike if you're not obsessive about the braking performance, which should still be adequate if you set the brakes up properly and have proper pads.

at your height I'd go with a paratrooper-style folder on 26" wheels (smaller than road bike wheels but bigger than the little folders.)
it should fit in trunk but removing front wheel is no-brainer and for rear wheel, clearing the derailleur around the gears only takes doing right once until it's nbd too.
you're also not locked into sourcing tiny tires or inner-tubes or seat posts or other folder-specific parts.

Ok, my bike is turning left on it's own. It's impossible to ride no-handed. I've trued the wheel like five times on the fork and it's as straight as it fucking gets. Less than half millimetre of wobble and I always remembered to turn it around few times to assure it's not pulled to the side. Is it time to buy a truing stand or is the fork actually fucked?

Yes were there's a will there's a way.
I'll tell you about my conditions, I live in Iowa our average lows in C° for the winter are -8, -10°C. Our lowest in 2018 was -27°C. Lowest I've ridden was -18°C. I'm not telling you this for crass macho bragging but because biking is my mode of transport, I'm a commuter (averaging 20 miles a day), and If I mainly biked recreationally like hell I would be biking in winter. Like I said before, the fred/enthusiast mindset is alien to me, but you should absolutely give it another try and give yourself some time to acclimate. If it ends up being just miserable, there's always indoor training.

If you're having to remove and replace headset cups, I'd probably just bring it to the shop if you don't already have the tools to do so. Might run you $20 and you likely wouldn't even have to leave it since winter is usually the slow season for repairs.

I've noticed that most shimano hydro disc brakes I've seen try to warn users off from using any pad that isn't resin. Couldn't fix the problem, thought I am just a noob starting to get into cycling, but it hasn't changed much since I have started.

It's probably due to anatomy (x-legs, bow-legs, outwards pointed feet and whatever combinations).
I have mounted some pedal extenders to widen the q-factor recently, did
not really help other than my shoes not rubbing on the bike anymore.

Only possible solution is to go to a bike fitter who has good analyzing tools and pay 100 + bucks.

Have tried wearing thicker clothes or thinner ones, didn't change much.

One thing not mentioned is saddle position. Saddle slammed back brings your knees more up to your chest. If you take a lesson from triathlon riders, they slam the saddle forward and go for very short cranks. I'm tall and have tried 180mm to 165mm cranks, 165 was way easier on the knees.
Last suggestion: learn to spin in lower gears, don't mash

I need new cranks to replace these shitty fucked french-threaded ones.
I'm contemplating getting a "euro" (BSA) bottom bracket, with a spline spindle, tubular BMX cranks and a spider to use my current double.
Would any problems come of this? The bike is just an old steel one and it's going to cost a fair amount to replace all these bits, so I don't want them to not-work. I like the prospect of being able to change to a 1x with a cool cutout as well if I wanted.

and also the use of a gym leg raise as this works the core and hips along with the legs

try bike with the center of your foot closer to the cuneiform and navicular bones (note you will need good foot strength or siff shoes)
its not good for going fast like pedaling with your forefoot / metatarsal bones

its something I used to do for riding in boots that have a large heel as it keeps the boot much more secure on the pedal
different muscles are used and I find it helps for climbing hills
there is much less stress on the calf's ankle and knees
and the seat and be a little lower to the ground

Height isn’t even the right way to measure crank length whatsoever, inseam is a better measurement, but I believe it’s technically based on your thighbone length.
Also there’s a decade of opinions saying it’s really not a significant issue, some midgets might have knee pain from rotating in such a large circle and some tall freaks might not use the full range of muscles they could be using, but generally people seem to say that crank clearance and avoiding pedal strikes is more important than an extra half a centimeter crank length for geometry purposes

Just looked it up though, that’s probably the best grocery-store bike in the world, or the shittiest bike-shop-tier bike in the world. I need a new headset - I fucked up the bearings on my old one and realized it when I was taking parts off it to swap to a new frame. Yes if you don't mind destroying your knees (and possibly your bike if you're strong enough)

For a fixed power/speed:
Slower = more muscle stress, less cardio
Faster = more cardio stress, less muscle

You want to balance it so neither half shits out prematurely. 90 rpm +/- 30 is the range you probably want to be in the majority of the time.

A chainstay shouldn’t be 60-66° at all it should be like 10° off of horizontal at most did you even think about what that angle meant or the location that you would clamp your front derailleur?
There is another part that is often 60-66° off of horizontal and used to mount front derailleurs on hardtails but I’m not telling you

Chances are this isn't the last time you'll ever need to take it off. A new one's like $15 if you've got some no-name square taper one. Figure out what the length is (hopefully it's stamped on there somewhere) and find something that looks the same on Amazon.

Shifting once in front usually changes the gear ratio (basically, the ratio of speed to cadence) the same as shifting 2 to 4 times in back depending on your gearing, so if you shift in front, also shift the opposite way in back a few steps so the change isn't as jarring.

Also don't use a screwdriver or anything else that will damage the axle if you aren't replacing the bb too. If wiggling/banging on it a little doesn't work, leave the crank bolt off and go riding with it (carefully) and it should work loose.

They're probably both fine. Those seem to be legit brands so they probably won't instantly disintegrate, and a crank isn't exactly a high-performance item anyway. I'd just choose based on which one looks closest to the old one (and of course make sure it's the same length and square taper).

If your old crank has a brand/part# visible you could try to find the exact same one too.

The old crank seems to be the shimano crank that came with the bike originally (or at least with the current drivetrain I'm not sure if it was replaced at any point) which is why I was thinking about shoving it back on even though I can't get it off. I imagine replacing it with the same part would be pretty expensive.

Depends what groupset it is and what you consider 'expensive'. If it's a cheaper one you might be able to get a whole new crankset (both sides) for $30-$40 on amazon if you can find the exact one.

About to buy this bike. Will I be in trouble if I ever need replacements for this groupset? I don't have more information about it than a couple of blurry pics like this. I really like it and for 100€ it looks like a steal, but it is going to be a beater to ride to the gym and back and I'd rather not have to dump another 100€ on it if the derailleur breaks or whatever. I like it, and I'm doing precisely what you're saying, seriously considering dumping my old pos ten speed back on the shop that sold it to me 5 years ago for whatever they give me, because the tape/pads/bottle cage/saddle/freewheel need replacing and I'd rather get a new bike I like more, hopefully one in which I can shift gears without having to even think of the chain dropping. It has Vitoria Rubinos but I'm keeping my Gatormemes, if they're in good condition I might put on a couple of blown tires on the old one before dumping it on the shop and keep them as spares.

It's worth buying for the frame, but low end worn mirage/ avanti 8 speed campagnolo is pretty shitty and extremely uncompatible and parts are expensive and rare and the people who owned it tended to actually ride it.
An 8 speed campy rear hub ONLY takes -some- 8 speed campy cassettes which are themselves expensive and hard to find.
When the shifters get old they slip out of gear and upshift under heavy load on steep climbs
The brakes are absolute fucking garbage.
The chainrings are a meme campy bcd.
The bottom bracket is likely italian threaded.
you need slightly different tools for a lot of it.

It's gorgeous stuff and chorus/ record is fantastic but 8 speed campy is a rich mans game.

Bikes are still lego though. You can probably eek out a little more life from those parts and slowly upgrade it to more utiliterian stuff if you have a line on nice parts.

If the ergos are broken, what you should do is find some 7 spd or higher shimano 105/600/ultegra/da downtube shifters with friction-indexing rings. They'll shift your current drivetrain fine in friction mode and then give you an avenue to going back to indexing with a shimano system in the future. The frame has bosses for them.
that will also mean you don't have to stick with a campy 8 rear hub if that goes, and you can still keep the rest of it.

in my experience all 8 speed ergos can shift triples because they have micro ratcheting, so lots of little clicks, not indexing, and all have quite a lot of throw.

It's the entire spindle length, yeah.
it -probably- doesn't matter if you go off by a little but sometimes your fd's limit screws have no adjustment left so can't handle any more change, and sometimes your clearance getting smaller is an issue and it does suck to make your q-factor gratuitously wider.

Also the BB in your bike now is not even necessarily the ideal length.

There's a little piece on the bottom of my chain stay that takes the exposed gear wire from under the bottom bracket and guides it into the little bit of cabling that wraps into the rear derailleur. Does that part have a name? I need a replacement

The bit comes after that, hanging off the chain stay closer to the derailleur. It's just a little bolt thing that the cable end and plug into. I have no idea what to search for I keep getting barrel adjusters and stuff

I took apart and put together a shimano 9-speed casette. It was just one screw holding the sprockets together, iirc. I don't see why 7- and 8-speed casettes would be different.

Went outsides for a bike ride again today, my usual 61 km route.
At this point I don't even know why I am doing this, it's self-induced suffering with nothing in return.
I don't get stronger (the contrary has happened since end of October for whatever reasons), with great effort to keep on going over 25 km/h average.
I am tired and have headache after the ride.

Also I haven't got motivation to properly clean and maintain my bike due to lack of facilities and tools.

You'd ask why not stopping then?
Well, it was a pipe dream of mine at the beginning of the year to sometimes in the future be strong enough to ride those beautiful mountain passes, but as usual, reality will catch up to you eventually.

The strongest I got was from short commutes where I would absolutely gun it for three miles and end up home covered in sweat. Long rides are probably catabolic. Burning muscle. Do hard short rides every other day and see how far you can go on occasional long rides.

how is such knee-elbow overlap considered acceptable? surely the preferable aero position would be to get the elbows narrow, if the knees wouldn't slam into them. and then all the cheap 17 degree stems with nondescript branding max out at 110mm (ok you can get 120mm if you open up your wallet), while pros use 120-150mm stems. i doubt my 58cm bike is significantly the wrong size for me at 182.5cm but with my long ape arms i think i could use a longer stem than the stock 90mm 17 degree stem.

afaik that is mainly done with endurance geometry road bikes so that the head tube won't stop you from getting low in the front. pros do it to save a bit of weight and gain a bit of stiffness too. getting a long enough stem to compensate for the reduced reach seems a tad expensive tho.

I'm 193 cm and ride a 58 cm frame with about 400 mm of reach with a -6* 120 mm stem. I can kind of get my knees to brush my elbows if I tuck them in towards the top tube when I'm in the drops, but I also have 3T Ergosum bars on that bike which are fairly compact. I don't see how you'd be too scrunched up with a 110 mm stem when you're 10 cm shorter than me. I have a long torso and long arms and fairly short legs, my saddle height could put me on a 56 cm frame but then I would need a 130 or 140 mm stem.

Quality with aluminum frames isn't really a huge thing people obsess over like with steel. I think largely because aluminum is more of a black box, no stickers telling you the butting on the tubes and whatever. Weight is pretty key though. A cheap aluminum frame can weigh more than a high end steel frame I think.
Obviously a Cannondale CAAD bike is going to be way lighter than a Walmart bike, and probably designed to flex in good ways. I wouldn't worry much about the quality of a cheap MTB. Fat tires will compensate for any harshness

Not necessarily, derailleurs usually have a maximum and minimum compatible chainring size. Then there's the seat tube angle and the pull direction, some derailleurs will only work if the wire comes from below or from above.

You're right on the CX.
A gravel bike is a spectrum, ranging from mountain bike to road bike. It can be slack or aggressive, with or without fender/rack mounts, with a lot or little tire clearance, and so on.
A CX bike is a gravel bike, but a gravel bike is not necessarily a CX bike.

Not too long ago the term 'gravel bike' wasn't a thing. There was just CX bikes. They were made to race cyclocross but were also made to be versatile, had mounting points for fenders and racks, and were known to be good commuters.

I will add what I know just as a single data point:
my bike came stock with a shimano fd -- an old, low end one -- and a set of 52/42 rings on an SR crank.
I've switched to a suntour crank with 53/38 rings and finally a Shimano crank (also changed bb to hollowtech) with 50/34 rings and all I had to do was some slight limit adjustment on the fd.

I thought that the more I increase the distance and push hard each time, I would get not only more power in my legs but also cardiovascular endurance.

When I think about it, at the start of the year I only rode 30 km and increased it to 44 km and had the most power in August to ride some 88 km with almost 2000 m elevation gain in the small mountains.

After that I upped it to a 85 km route with 900 m elevation and tried to make it a regular. Rode that every 3rd day or so. Maybe that was counter productive.

it looks alright but it looks like 3 people backed out of the deal at €160-200, i'm not familiar with this site so i don't know if it's worrying or not if deals fall through

so I bought a collectible bike dirt cheap, will probably have to take it apart and get new nickel on some rusted steel bits but aside from that should I keep it as-is and put it on display or actually bother to make it ridable which would require some new bits non-optional for safety and some optional bits for comfort like new planetary hub and modern lights
