>>1429828All terrain transport trucks are serious business but riding them feels like a king riding an elephant
>>1429894We had this one field exercise in the southwestern desert with a 7ton and a few HMMVs. After setting up air command with power and cooling so brass can play real life rts with the birds above, all we had to do was sit around and ensure power and cooling for their computers. We got bored so we started riding the nearby dunes in our only 7ton. We managed to get it stuck in some seriously soft sand, anything we tried dug it deeper. The 7ton we brought with us wasn't equipped with a winch so we decided to pull it out with a HMMV and tow hooks. The HMMV wasn't designed to tow 30k lbs which broke its axle. Our situation just went from oh shit to oh shitfuck with two stranded vehicles in the desert now. Some genius thought up the idea of using the chain ratchet (this thing
>>1429614) to slowly pull the 7ton using the HMMV's tow hook as an anchor point and some other genius agreed causing everyone else to agree, even the SSgt. The idea was, if we can unfuck the 7ton, we can tow the HMMV and claim its axle failure wasn't from towing past its capabilities. Well, while using the chain ratchet we reached a point we couldn't turn it any further so we grabbed a 3m long cheater bar to keep turning it. One of the links failed and sent itself a feet away from the SSgt's head along with the rest of the chain whipping the side of the 7ton, luckily missing all our guys standing around throwing cigarette butts and sunflower hulls everywhere but leaving a fist sized dent in the sheet metal. At that point we gave up on rescuing it ourselves and had to call in another unit's 7ton to pull us out. I wasn't in charge of anything on this shenanigans so I got away but my SSgt got his ass turned inside out by the SgtMaj for this one.
