When I ride the DC Metro, I could spend almost 10 bucks on a few trips in the city and another several bucks to park. When I lived in NYC, a two-way trip costs nearly $6. With a car, I only need to worry about finding a place to park my vehicle and free parking is still around.
If America wants to start making transit into a real option for people, it's gotta be convenient, affordable and effective. $2-$3 fares are going to need to be reevaluated if you're going to compete with the automobile.
