but you can probably dramatically reduce the money spent on wheels by not grinding them down every time you want to slow or stop, and discs are objectively better for general usage

That's obviously not true if road bikes and even TT bikes are using them. If you actually like rim brakes you're probably a fairweather pussy or a pleb using non carbon wheels.

The whole point of discs are modulation which actually makes it harder to lock the wheels giving you more control. I mentioned it that because it's a 100% indication of a shit rider when they say "hurr but muh walmart bike can lock its wheels instantly".

I did 55k km on my mavic aksium cheap wheels and they still aren't anywhere I'd consider dangerous to ride

Yeah no. Technically you're supposed to replace them every 5 years if you ride consistently as per the manufacturer. I know plenty of people and have heard plenty of stories of seatposts and handlebars breaking after enough use. It's not like it's cheap shit either. Maybe something like a Paul component seatpost would last you longer but I definitely wouldn't want to ride anything for a lifetime.

I think how long wheels last depends on brake pad compound used as well as weather conditions you ride in plus any significant descents. A fair weather cyclist's wheels would last significantly longer than a winter warrior's, for example. I'm reaching about 30k KM on my cheap alex rims which see rain, salt, snow, sand, dirt, everything and I'm feeling comfy but weary about how long they'll last.

Besides the pads (and how clean they are kept) the rim wall varies in size. You can buy some absurdly thick touring rims. Rigda (now named Ryde) sells some.
I've heard about other touring rims either made with or coated with some extra shit to make them last longer.
Back in the old MTB days there were people who said they'd wear through a rim in a year

Braking distance is related to tyre footprint, and speed. Disc brakes will just make skinny tyred bikes skid more.
